be sure the battery is fully charged. be sure the blades are sharp. be sure there is no grass or string or wire wrapped around the spindles under the deck. be sure it is firing on both cylinders . be sure the belt is in good shape .
The problem is in the carb. First try using some bottled fuel system cleaner at a heavier dose than for a car, but be aware that too much may damage the carb. Then run the fuel out and fill with fresh and try again. When you engage blades and it sputters try to throttle down until it runs smooth and then slowly bring engine back up to mowing speed. You should be able bring it up and mow. Run out the fuel tank. If unable to do this trick and get the fuel system cleaner through you will need to have the carb. taken apart and cleaned thoroughly.
Hi, the hydrostatic drive is most likely over heating. Remove the battery and battery carrier, from here you can clean all grass and debris from the hydro cooling fins and fan. Hope this helps, regards Phil.
A common loss of power problem with B&S V twins is a set of crumpled valve push rods. Means you are running on one cylinder which is generally OK unless you also want to mow. Easy to check, pull one plug wire at a time off. If it continues to run on one cylinder but not the other, that is your dead cylinder. As the intake is not opening, there will not be a wet plug. Costs nothing to check and could be your problem.
could be a ignition unit (s)breaking down when it getts hot ?
could be a tank breather not working or a restriction in flow of fuel
could be a valve not opening fully or closing fully ie tight valve
fit in line ignition tester and run unit and see if spark disapears when unit gets hot if so ignition prob if not its other problems
THE engine has done a lot of work and the compression is down ,,,,starts ok but hasent got the go in it to cut the grass so either rebuild engine or get a new one.
But first check the govenor rod that runs from the carby yo the flywheel as it might be uncliped.
Check the valve clearances--if they are tight, the added heat of climbing will close the clearance to the point that the valve(s) quit sealing causing loss of power. Check the spark plug(s)--should show a medium brown on the interior insulator(s). Make sure the muffler is not plugged. Check the engine ventilation--grass clippings and dirt can choke the air flow. Make sure the wheels turn freely.
