Ice maker problems are almost always a problem. Sometimes I will locate an issue and fix it and then it will work for a short period and then break again. So, now I just replace the ice maker as a general rule. This is much more likely for success. However, the replacement ice maker is often not an exact match. And again, the this and the that sometimes causes problems. I will never accept a new customer on the grounds that I am going to fix their home ice maker. Make sure the ice machine is getter water like it is supposed to. Check the filter and the tubes. If the problem persists, get a new ice maker. If that ice maker angers you, get some ice cube trays.

Let me start by telling you WHAT NOT TO DO.

1. Never clean a waffle maker while it's still hot. Let it cool completely.
   
   
2. Never dunk your entire waffle maker in water.
   
   
3. Never use scouring pads, steel wool or abrasive cleansers.
   
   
4. Never use a knife or pointed object to clean your waffle maker(I've actually seen that advised on less reputable sites).

When it comes to cleaning a waffle maker, your first source of information should always be the owner's manual. There are many different kinds of waffle makers, so your buddy Mr Breakfast will gladly defer his expertise to the company that makes your waffle maker.





What I can speak about is my own favorite waffle iron. It's a modern electric waffle iron with non-stick and non-removable baking plates. That's the same kind you have? Oh good. It looks like you came to the right guy.

Cleaning the baking plates:

1. Remove any small puddles of oil with a dry paper towel.
   
   
2. Brush away any crumbs with a soft-bristled kitchen brush or old toothbrush.
   
   
3. Remove any batter stuck to the iron with a rubber spatula.
   
   
4. To remove really-stuck-on batter, douse the baked-on batter with cooking oil. Wait 5 minutes for the batter to soften. Dab the batter off with a paper towel or cloth.
   
   
5. To prevent staining and long-term oil build up, wipe down the baking plates with a damp cloth or paper towel.
   
   
6. Make sure the waffle iron is completely dry before storing.
   
   

To clean the exterior, wipe down the housing and handle with a damp cloth.


Keeping it clean:

There are a couple things to remember to make sure our kind of waffle maker stays clean.

1. Unless stated otherwise in the manufacturer's instructions, you should never coat the baking plates of a non-stick waffle iron with cooking spray. Over time that will give you a gummy build up that will turn your waffle maker to junk. Today, when a waffle maker makes the claim that it's non-stick, they really mean it. The only oil you need is the oil in the recipe. If your waffles are sticking, it's your batter that needs more oil, not your waffle maker.
   
   
2. Unless stated otherwise in the manufacturer's instructions, don't use soap to clean your baking plates. Soap can be the enemy of a non-stick surface. Oil - on the other hand - can be a great friend. It creates a thin layer that helps maintain the non-stick surface. Soap will completely obliterate that layer of friendly oil. Harsh soaps can deteriorate the manufacturer's non-stick surface over time.

First off check the freezer door switch for operation. Depress the plunger and make sure the light goes off when the door switch plunger is depressed. Ligt stays on = bad door switch / no ice production as the door switch provides power to the ice-maker when the door is closed.

Let me just add that many ice-maker related problems are due to the freezer temp rising above 16 deg F. The freezer starts warming up due to ice build up on the evaporator coils and then the internal air-flow is blocked by the ice build up causing the temps to rise. Look closely at the back of the unit for any signs of ice build up.
If you see ice build up......
1. Unplug the unit
2. Remove the freezer contents
3. Place a fan directing air into the freezer for just over 2 hours. (Water mess!)
4. Clean up the excess water and restart the unit. (Add freezer content)
5. After 8 - 10 hours check for ice production.

If after doing the above you have ice production then most likely you have an automatic defrosting problem.

If it still does not make ice, the steps in the link above will isolate what has failed in the ice-maker.

Before testing the ice-maker using the steps in the link.. I recommend you peform a manual defrost with a fan. If 8 - 10 hours after the manual defrrost you do not have ice production,, use the link and troubleshoot the ice maker.

I would suggest making sure the coils under the refrig are clean of dust , lint , pet hair , etc . Also , letting the ice build up so it gets closer to the bottom of the ice maker (coldness of the ice will help keep the ice maker cold ) will result in ice maker cycling more often (making ice) .

You need to remove the ice maker the function that heats the lower element should last only a few seconds so I believe the ice maker will need to be rebuilt or replaced. Sea Breeze
