Hi there,
You can recover data on it with data recovery program to avoid losing your files.I have succeed to recover lost data from hard drive with Tenorshare. It can recover data after deeply scanning your external hard drive to look for lost data due to drives crash. You can get it here: http://www.any-data-recovery.com/index.htm
After you recover your data, you can format it to check out whether it can be fixed.
If it fails, you will have to go to a recovery office where supply data recovery service but let's hope not because it will cost you a lot of money and whether they can recover data is not guaranteed.
This article will help. How To Recover Data From Crashed Hard Drive?

All right! Based on my experiences, there are two ways to go for you:
1). Try to show these hidden files back like this:
Start => Run => Type in "control folders" and press "OK" =>Click "View" and hook "Show hidden files and folders"=> Press "OK".
2). Try to recover these inaccessible files back for free with the help of a file data recovery freeware here:

Next time, you should never save the needed files on only one hard drive.

Hello Modeling,

Please try the Data Recovery Software available in market to recover the files. First try the demo software of the data recovery software( Recover Data for FAT and NTFS) from their particular website. If the demo software displays all your data you need then purchase their full version software to save your valuable data. Because in demo software you are not able to save the data. Please try the data recovery software for
FAT and NTFS partition.

I have a WD my book drive. When I try to see the files on the drive they are Not there, But when I click the properties the drive shows half the drive space is used. how do I get the files to show be...

Hi,
It is due to virus activity. Some virus make the contents of the drive hidden, thats why user can't see the files. This can be fixed and data would be available to you. However, there are number of steps involved.
It is suggested that go to FOLDER OPTIONS - and select 'SHOW HIDDEN FILES & FOLDERS' and uncheck/ Deselect 'HIDE PROTECTED SYSTEM FILES'.
creativetech_53.jpg
It would show the hidden files/ folders, if the system not infected Otherwise, from the clean/ virus free system you can see your data and copy all the required files/data. Select the required files and right-click and change the properties of the file by un-checking the hidden attribute. Please note that you can not change the properties (hidden attribute of the files) if the files are marked as system files. To change the attribute of such folders you can download and use iReset.

Also, make sure that you have a good antivirus installed and its updated. Scan your system and clean it.

Let me know if any further clarification/ assistance is required.

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

My WD My Book Essential 1TB External is not showing up on 'My Computer'. It was working perfectly in the morning, then when I rebooted my machine it no longer showed up.

disconnect your WD ext HDD. and reboot your computer. then connect again. if still not showing. go to device manager (right click my computer then properties -- click device manager). expand by clickin "Disk drives" category here it will show all the hard drives installed in your computer including your WD ext HDD . if you see yellow sign on your external drive right click and remove then go to Action menu click on Scan for hardware. it should detect and install the driver again. if still the same or maybe its not on the list of Disk drives.. try to change another USB cable .. i hope this will help

Accidentally disconnected external HD while moving files

have the files been deleted from the laptop? if not i would simply do a fresh format on the external and re migrate data. if they are then you can get software such as undelete or recover my files to restore your deleted data off of your laptop drive.

My WD MyBook (1 TB) shows as empty. Windows Explorer says I have 830 GB free but shows me an empty disk. I have important information on it that I have possibly lost forever.

Hi Alliey77,

DON'T PANIC!

The drive may have lost the index or suffered some minor curruption. As it is showing an appropriate amount of space the data is most likely still there.

First and foremost, turn it off and don't use it for anything as any files you copy onto it now could overwrite the missing data. Once you have done that, comment back here with your location(country, state, city).

Once you do that I can refer you to a nearby Data Recovery facility to have your files retrieved.

My Book Essential does not show on My Computer - Can't access files.

No matter what I tried, I ws unable to get my "MyBook" working. My solution? Remove from case and voila, it's just a seial ATA drive attached to a small circuit board which converts it to USB. Disconnect from the circuitboard and plug into the motherboard. Imstant success. It failed as an external drive three weeks after the warranty ran out. WD support was zero help.
