Welcome to FixYa!
No, you cannot download e-books from Amazon and read it in your iRriver Device not unless Amazon has specified that it is compatible with you iRiver Device.
E-Book is a general term for Electronic Book but does not mean that all e-books are universal. Different e-book device manufacturers have different types of e-books. So might as well purchase or download an e-book from iRiver. Or at least check first if the e-book you want from Amazon is compatible with your iRiver Device.
Thank you for using FixYa.
Have a great day.

The thing you need to do is get an Amazon Kindle e-Reader and download some e-books to it.
Then you need to talk to good friends or family members that have Amazon Kindles and that have content on them you would like to share.
The next thing is to deregister your Amazon Kindle from your own account and register it on your friend or family members account. Then download the books that you would like to share from your family member and voila they are on your Amazon Kindle now.
After that you deregister your Amazon Kindle from your family members account and reregister it back onto your account and you are done. If your family member wants books of yours to share then you just do it all in reverse putting their Kindle on your account etc.
Amazon Kindle books come with DRM protection or Digitial Rights Management software so that you are allowed to download a book a set number of times, similar to songs on i-Tunes, and once this limit is reached for each book you can't download it anymore without repurchasing it. This number is typically 5-6 times per book but can vary based on publisher and specific book title negotiations.
