A code saying 5d or Sd is coming up on my machine, what is that

The 5d code is actually an Sd code and it means suds have been detected in the washer. This can indicate to much soap or the wrong kind of soap was used in the washer. Be sure HE detergent is being used. If can also indicate the drain pump is restricted or the drain hose is kinked.

Sd is referring to suds. Did you use too much detergent or are you using the correct detergent. It should say He on container.

Error code SD/5d means LONG DRAIN. This error appears when the drain time exceeds 8 minutes and the water valves turn off. After 4 minutes the "Sd" error will be displayed, and then 4 minutes later the F21 error code will be displayed. Press PAUSE/CANCEL two times to clear the display. Please Check the drain hose and make sure it is not plugged or kinked. If the drain hose if fine then unplug the washer and check the electrical connections at the pump and make sure the pump is running. Check the drain pump filter for foreign objects. To access the drain pump and filter remove the front kick panel and trace the drain hose to the bottom of the washer, drain pump would be located there. If you are not able to access it, then replace the back panel as well. Plug in washer or reconnect power. If the issue is still not resolved then you would need to replace the drain pump. The troubleshooting page in the owner's manual says: 5d "Sd" Suds Detected - Did you use regular detergent? Regular or hand-washing detergents are not recommended for this washer. Use only High Efficiency (HE) detergent. Did you add too much detergent? Always measure detergent. Follow detergent manufacturer's directions. If excessive suds are detected, the washer will display this code while running a suds reduction correction routine at the end of the wash cycle.The susds reduction routine removes extra suds and asures proper rinsing of your garments. If te code remains and the wash cycle dial is flashing after the recovery routine has stopped, re-select your desired cycle using cold water. Press start. Do not add detergent.

SD is the code for suds detect. You may have used too much detergent, or you may not have used HE laundry detergent.

5d is a definitely a the code for a plugged discharge. We removed the lower access panel and discovered a virtual treasure: $12.50 in quarters, nickels, dimes and pennies, a pen, a pencil, collar stays, 10 bobby-pins, 3 barrettes, a elastic headband, a draw string, a box cutter, 3 washers, 3 broken zipper parts, a elastic waist band. Amazing it took all to trigger a 5d error code. Hope this helps!

5D is actually SD which is suds detection. This could be because you are using non HD detergent.

It happened to me when the discharge hose backed up because the sink into which it was discharging got backed up. It looks like the discharge hose not flowing properly is the most common cause of this error code.;

5d is actually SD
it means SUDS
you have suds detected in the pump
Your using too much soap and the machine cannot rinse it
try one load with out any soap
from that load on you should not be using any more that a table spoon per load

SD would be too much suds or the pump is clogged and can't remove the water fast enough.

It is possible that instead of 5d that you have a SD. The SD error is usually form an excess of suds in the washer. In most cases you can run the machine through a couple rinse cycles and clear that right up. If that does not work then you will need to clean out the drain and your pump filter. The filer is located behind the bottom panel and you just unscrew it from the pump. If infact you had a 5D error then I am sorry for misinforming you, I have just never heard of a 5 D and I have been services them for years. I really hope this helped you, good luck.
