I have a sony KDS-R60XBR1. The lamp burned out so I ordered a new one. When I took the old one out, I noticed the area directly in front of the lamp, the first thing the lamp shines into, is a little dirty around the edges and needs to be cleaned prior to installing the new lamp. What should I use to clean this small 2"x2 1/2" area? It's not dust, it's like a thin layer of dirty film or buildup. I don't want to scratch it and ruin it's surface.

Use a eyeglass cloth or LCD screen cloth. Use NO solvants on it. Just dry cloth. ALSO goto the settings menu and put the tv in HIGH altitude mode. There tv's get too hot and the light engines go out. Green or blue tint. or dots. It also helps the lamp last longer.

Blinking red light that says bulb
It means your lamp is burnt out and you have to replace the lamp with a new lamp. When you install the new lamp dont touch the glass lens part at the front of lamp or the oil from your finger will burn the new lamp and it wont work.

New lamp is placed in tv, but tv won't come on. Light in front of power button is blinking green, then blinks red. Not sure what the problem is
One question, why you decided to replace lamp in tv? Did tv showed red lamp light blinking?
Suggestion, make sure lamp cover has been placed back in its position after lamp replacement, lamp cover is first thing that you removed from tv cabinet to take out lamp.

Just lost the picture and now the lamp light is flashing
If lamp light on Sony TV front start flashing that means Lamp is dead and need to be replaced.
Lamp replacement is easy and procedure would be written in user manual of TV.

How To change Sony XL-5100 Projector Lamp with housing
  • Installation is Quick and Easy:
    In most cases, replacing your projection lamp is quick and easy. However, it is recommended that you consult your owner's manual for more detailed instructions:
  • Unplug your TV from your power outlet
  • Allow the lamp to cool for at least one (1) hour before replacing it
  • Remove the Lamp unit cover (Usually located at the rear of the television)
  • Unscrew the lamp housing unit
  • Remove the old lamp housing unit and discard
  • Screw in the new lamp housing unit
  • Place the cover back onto your TV unit Caution: Do NOT touch the bulb directly with your fingers.

    The lamp may be starting to go, the symptoms you describe are classic warning signs. You could unplug tv let it cool down and check lamp most likely the glass will not look clear maybe a little milky or smoky in areas..dead give away.
