My MTD Yard Machine Y2500 starts fine and works with the choke partly closed. It also idles fine with the choke fully closed but stalls when I press on the throttle when the choke is fully closed.

When the choke is fully closed your choking the fuel out,, thats why when you give i t gas it dies , its not supposed to run with the choke on and getting fuel , use the choke only until the motor warms up to operating temp,, then open it,, and you should be fine,

Thanks for the response but I made a mistake in the request. It stalls when the choke I opened, not closed.

no worries,, if thats the case,, you need to turn the idle mixture screw in about a 1/4 turn, that should fix the problem,, if it doesn't,, pull the plug and see if its wet and black, if so put the idle screw back where it was and replace the plug , its not firing fast enough to burn all the fuel so its flooding itself out.

Thanks again, I'll give it a try.

one other thing,, make sure the vent in the fuel cap is clear,,

Stalls when choke is opened.

If you adjusted idle to spec with the choke on, you need to do it again with a fully warm engine. Try turning up the idle with the choke on, to around 3k rpm, then see if you can back off on the choke.
You have a fueling issue - have you done carbs before? there are internal passages and settings that must be cleaned and adjusted.

Why does MTD yard machine Y2500 engine runs, spinner doesn't spin?

most likely you have stripped the shaft ,its basically a flexible connecting rod inside the metal pole that connects the motor to the gear at the other end

I have a Briggs & Stratton 2 cylinder motor Model # 42A707-125201. Runs fine at high speed with the choke off, but it will not idle smoothly unless the choke is partially on (about 2/3). I rebuilt...

The fact the choke must be 2/3 applied to obtain a smooth idle indicates not enough fuel is being supplied by the carb at idle speed. Applying the choke richens the air/fuel ratio.

I suggest you revisit the carb idle air/fuel jets, air passages and any adjustments as well as checking for intake air leaks.

I have a MTD Honda Lawnmower that is having idling trouble. It starts great, but once the chock has disengaged itself the engine surges. If I continue to hold the choke on just a little, it runs just...

Generally this indicates a "lean" condition in the carburetor and there are no adjustments. Depending on your abilities, the best fix is to remove the carburetor and clean all the metering passages/jets. In some cases you are better off just replacing the carburetor. I have seen some Honda carbs. as low as $15-$20. Hope this helps to some degree.

dirty gas. the fuel bowl likely has junk in it which plugs the jets as soon as it starts. you may get luck just emptying the carb bowl but a good carb clean and new gas will do the trick. (dump out the old gas

Choke won't open or close

I think your bike has a CV carb which doesn't have a choke. It's called an enrichener. Pulling out the "choke" knob merely dumps more gas into the carb. If the bike starts normally with the knob pulled out, you do not have a problem. On a cold/cool day, pull the knob out and start the bike. If it idles faster than normal the system is working. Pushing the knob in should drop the idle speed, maybe stalling the bike if it is not fully warmend up.
