My Carrier AC outside unit will not tuen on. All fuses and breakers are good, and I can hear a humming coming from the solenoid. When I disconnect the wires from the house unit to the solenoid there is a clicking of the valve. I have taken out the solenoid, could it possibly need to be replaced? thank you!

If you hear a clicking sound from solenoid liquid line valve you will also hear a hizzling sound indicating equilizing pressure of the high and low side of the system. If not, check the high and low side pressure of the system with your gauge manifold. All valves of your manifold should be closed when you attached the hoses respectively. If there is no readings from both gauges there is no refrgerant from your system. The AC unit will not start to run due to low pressure because the low pressure switch is open. Check for system leakage and repair the leakage before adding Freon gas.

does the indoor fan come on if fan comes on then the problem is out side if the fan is not coming on and the breaker blows this will turn off the out door unit also due to the 24v transformer is located in the indoor unit your system has two breakers one for out door and one for indoor units as far as your contactor goes with power off look at the contacts if pitted bad replace it most need replaced after 5yrs also check for voltage drop on the load side look at the capacitor to make sure it is not swelled up on top if so then bad unplug the fan motor and bump the contactor with an insulated object to make sure the compressor is running if not with power off remove the cap on the side of the compressor and look to see if wires are connected good they some times get lose and ends burn off also on the contactor they some times buzz when bad hope this helps with your problem

Is the furnace fan (indoor fan ) running. If not the problem is with the inside unit. It supplies the control power to operate the entire system and has a control fuse on the circuit board. If it is running but not the outside unit then the problem is outside.

We have a 6 year old air conditioner Byrant 591B. The outside unit is not working it make a slight hum when the thermostat is set to cool, but the fan does not run. The furnace is working fine

You picked the wrong picture...lol. You have a split system and that humm you hear comes from the contactor. That means the thermostat is asking the compressor which is outside to come on. If you hear the humm but nothing is working, Check the breaker and then replace the fuses in your fuse box by the condensing unit, or the outside unit if the breakers are OK. It should have a disconnect between 3 to 10 feet of the unit depending on your codes and city requirements. No matter what, if you stand at your unit and look at the conduit, it will lead to your electrical disconnect. It could be a sub-breaker or fuses. It is usually fuses because a breaker could take up to 6 sin waves to respond as where a fuse could take only 2 sin waves. Replace both fuses. As time goes on, fuses become warn from constant load changes and heat and sooner a latter, they just wear out like any other component. Change the fuses and fire your unit back up. If it pops the new breakers, you have other issues and it's time to call an HVAC guys.

What could it be if my inside ac unit comes on, but the outside unit doesn't?

Make sure circuit breaker for the outside unit is on or the fuses are good whichever you have. If they are on you can check the capacitor in the outside unit. The capacitor will be a round or oval can and can be metal or plastic. You can also look at the contactor to see what shape it's in.

No cold air-the compressor unit outside does not come on.

I believe the soft hum you are hearing is the contactor pulling in. You can check by standing by the outdoor unit and have someone inside turn the a/c on and off at the thermostat. If the contactor is being energized you will hear a distinctive click as it energizes or de-energizes. If this happens check your main power sources to the condenser. Make sure the circuit breaker in the fuse box is turned on. Also check your outside disconnect box that connects to the condenser. Remember this is high voltage so be careful. A lot of these disconnect boxes have cartridge fuses inside of it. You will need a voltmeter to check the continuity of the fuses to make sure they are ok. Just one being bad could make the condenser inoperative. If you need to change the cartridge fuses, make sure you put in the exact size needed. putting in the wrong size for you unit can cause problems. Always buy "time delay" fuses . They cost more but they will not blow out on initial start up like the cheap ones will. I hope this info helps you....
Good luck...

We had a lightning storm and now the ac wont work

Depending on where you live, there are electrical codes that require a 'disconnect' near the outside unit.. This is to be removed prior to servicing that unit and prevent the service person from getting injured if someone inadvertantly turned it on The humming sound you may be hearing may be the fan motor insise that unit, It is possible that the lightning strike generated a surge that damaged that fan motor winding.. With the protective screen removed and that unit disconnected from power.. try spinning the fan by hand to make sure it is free to turn, then reassemble everything and see if will start up. If it is a 220VAC system then you could also be missing one phase of power..You might want to contract an electrician for that aspect of troubleshooting. Be careful and goodluck..
