First I had to reseat one of the drives which had worked loose and become unseated during shipping. Then I had to format the hard drive and finally I had a 1TB external hard drive I could use. The light is still red.

If this is your bootable drive that windows in installed on you will need to completely reinstall windows to convert it back to FAT 32. If this is a spare drive then you can right click the drive in My computer and go to format and then reformat it as Fat 32.

Might need drivers. Try installed the drivers from http://www.cavalrystorage.com/download.aspx. If not, try a different USB port. You can always format the drive if it is new and see if that works.

The HDD is probably in working condition, however the enclosure may be damaged. You can remove the hdd inside the cavalry storage enclosure, and if you have a desktop install it in the desktop to get your data off of it. You may instead wish to purchase a new hdd enclosure which can be bought online from many websites such as http://ncix.com or newegg.com
