It is possible there is an intermittent contact, but I don't believe there is anything to worry about.
The HOLD slider does not turn off the recorder. It only turns the keyboard off and the display off as well. The clock keeps running.
A simple test?
Start a RECORDing operation and slide the switch to HOLD.
(In my VN-1800 the keyboard goes dead, but the display stays on.)
(In my DS-330, the keyboard goes dead and the display goes off.)
If I slide the switch to HOLD during a PLAYBACK operation, it keeps going until the file has finished playing. Then it goes blank.
i am even unable to start a recording because the recorder is not turning on when i slide the switch

Awww man ... Now I don't know what to say. I'm sure you checked the batteries, so there's no point asking if they are OK, is there? . .
Outside of that I don't know any other way of testing it.
Thank you for your prompt reply. You have done all you can to assist me. I really love this little recorder that can fit in the palm of your hand and is easy to operate. I really don't want to part with it. Thanks again for your assistance.

Gemma
