Olympus VN5000 (512 MB 3005 Hours) Handheld Digital Voice Recorder Logo
Anonymous Posted on May 31, 2011

Purchased this recorder about 6 months ago. Now it can't turn off via the hold switch.A very sleek and convenient piece of apparatus. When I try again after 2 days it works fine but when i try to turn it off it can't turn off. Eventually when it does turn off, it can't turn on again.. What's wrong. Don't want to lose it. 6 months is not enough service.

It is possible there is an intermittent contact, but I don't believe there is anything to worry about.

The HOLD slider does not turn off the recorder. It only turns the keyboard off and the display off as well. The clock keeps running.

A simple test?
Start a RECORDing operation and slide the switch to HOLD.
(In my VN-1800 the keyboard goes dead, but the display stays on.)
(In my DS-330, the keyboard goes dead and the display goes off.)

If I slide the switch to HOLD during a PLAYBACK operation, it keeps going until the file has finished playing. Then it goes blank.

"i am even unable to start a recording because the recorder is not turning on when i slide the switch "

Awww man ... Now I don't know what to say. I'm sure you checked the batteries, so there's no point asking if they are OK, is there? . .
Outside of that I don't know any other way of testing it.

Thank you for your prompt reply. You have done all you can to assist me. I really love this little recorder that can fit in the palm of your hand and is easy to operate. I really don't want to part with it. Thanks again for your assistance.

Why it can't on

You mean why does it not switch on?
Perhaps only a fuse is blown. Or the cable is defect. Or it was defect a long time ago and you forgot.
So many things can be wrong. It is difficult to find the cause, having it on your desk, with correct tooling. Let alone trying to guess what is wrong without seeing the apparatus.
Try to follow the manual in how to set up and how to record.

We purchased our DVD player about 3 mths ago and everything was fine, then about a week ago after the kids were watching TV and went to record a show the DVD turned itself off. Now when we turn on our DVD...

If you only purchased it 3 months ago it should still be under warranty.

Just bring it back to your place of purchase for a refund or exchange.

My Emersom alarm clock is piece of junk..... you can not reset the time or alarm... junk products from Emerson

Co-signed. I have the ic200bk stereo dock, and the damn thing died within a year. Of course, Emerson's products are only covered for 90 days. How convenient for them.

Do NOT buy their products. You'll live to regret it.

Stiletto only records for about 18 munutes

Daylight savings time change a few months ago messed up the timer recording schedule - you must now fix it. Daylight savings time changes will always mess up this recorder. You must reset your recording schedule.

For more info on fixing, go to:

2 other remote possibilities:

If no signal is present at the time the recording is scheduled to start, the recording will be skipped.

Make sure you have followed all instructions on pp. 55-58

Zen sleek frozen after trying to delete songs

Why does technology make you work for what you already paid good money for? Have you tried going into Recovery Mode? You do this by holding down the Play/Pause button while triggering the Reset button. Once there, you have four options. Try selecting Disk Cleanup and then Reboot. You might need to re-Sync a few things but it's worth a shot. Good luck.
