Washing machine only agitates 1 way. wont lock in and agitate in opposite direction

Hi,
If this a whirlpool brand washer, there are sone parts bad in the agitator it's self. These parts are called dogs and they make the agitator rachet so that the top half only goes one direction. Does this sound like what you are experiencing? If so, let me know and I can assist you further.
Thanks
Vic

I have just had the same problem occur with my washer.
I found that the hot would work but the cold would not.
The fault is the cold water valve.
This is the part that the hose screws to at the back of the machine.
To have a look at it unscrew the top of the controls at the back and you will
find the valve.
Follow this link for the part.

Had the same problem with mine, could be a number of things but in my case it was a relatively simple fix - but you'll need to buy a part.
Open the lid and look inside, the bit sticking up in the middle of the machine is called the agitator. Remove all the fabric softner and lint filter from it and you'll see one very small bolt at the base.
I concocted a number of ratches stuck together to reach it but once undone you can pull the enitre agitator up an remove it.
The agitator is driven by metal bolt with teeth at the bottom of the tub, however the agitator itself is made entirley of plastic, therefore (prob due to age) the metal teeth had eaten away the inside of the agitator and so it was just spinning inside its hole!
eplace the agitator and problem solved.

Our machine , same model, was doing the same. Had a repairman cone out & it was the Motor Control unit, seems to be a fairly common problem. But now its fixed & working well.
