Could be faulty switch but more then likely the power supply has a bad capacitor. Sometimes bad caps can be identified by the top puffing up. But it would be better to have a capacitence meter.
You can try asking Sony for a printed manual, but they'll probably want to charge you for printing and shipping. It'll probably be cheaper and quicker to print it yourself. If you don't have a printer then your local library should.
Could also be the cable that runs to the head from the main board. One controls the signal and one the power to the elements. If either is disconnected the printer will still think its printing ok. Also there are some components on the print head if they fail you will need to repalce the head.
