Sears Craftsman 1/2 HP Chain Door Opener

I have a technical question. I own a Sears Craftsman 1/2 HP opener. I purchased it in 12/07.
Recently my remotes would not operate the door. I have erased all codes and reprogrammed each.
Whenever I try to open/close the door using the remotes, the door opener "bumps" and the motor
lights begin to blink. One remote (master) will operate only
if you hold the button constantly until door opens/closes.
Can you please tell me what might be causing this problem?
Thanks,

I had a problem with my craftsman 1/2 horse g.d.o.not being able to go down .it wouldnt reverse and close the door.after the second day of messing with it checking all the normal problems like the lite sensors and door binding and checking and setting the limit switches i was about to give up when i noticed that when i pressed the transmitter button to activate it to go down, there was a clicking in a selonoid that was attached to the printed circuit board.i looked it over again and again but i didnt see the problem when i deceided to use the ol "hit it with something trick" lol.well that didnt work either but what did work was to just use a insulated screwdriver and working from the circuit board side i gently pried the selenoid ever so slightely and it sparked and viola, the door went down.i guess what had happened was the selonoid had grounded itself out and it is what controls the "reversing" of the motor.this g.d.o.is 13 years old and it now works great again.so, set your limit switches ,check for any door binding and look over the printed circuit board very closely.listen for any clicking and investigate.

Door sensors may not be aligned or may be blocked. otherwise, the motor power setting may be too low.

The difficulty is determining if your remote or the receiver is bad. If you have another remote that works as it should then it is the remote. If you just have the one remote there is no way to tell which is bad.

My Craftsman remote won't close my garage door

If the remote opens and closes while inside the garage but not outside , there are a few things it could be. Assuming it was working fine before..
1. weak battery in remote.
2. remote itself could be bad. (unless you have more than 1 remote acting the same)
3. Logic board in opener is going bad causing limited range. Is the wire that hangs down from the opener straightened out? That is your remote antenna. Some people have coiled or even cut it off..reducing range.
4. Less likely but this can happen- interference from another electronic device, wireless routers, cell phone, new appliances etc.. can reduce remote range. Any new electronics recently purchased?

Is there a univeral remote for craftsman garage door openers?

Depends on the age of the opener. The model number is on the end of the opener closest to the door. Using it go to Sears parts and you can find out if the remote is still available.

Craftsman 1/2hp garage opener Homelink must be under unit to work

Have you tired reprogramming the remotes to the opener?

The opener receiver board may have failed, which happens. You can order a new one from Sears or other places on the Internet, and they are fairly easy to replace.

Once replaced, you will need to program the receiver to you remotes again.

Cant get 2 remotes for garage door openers working at same time

You have a remote that has reverted to an earlier technology. The only way out of this is to purchase the same exact model number called for by your opener and go through the programming. You will find the new one will work with one of the old ones. Remove the battery from the one that isn't and drop it in the garbage.
