My wife's compaq presario f700 turns on yet the screen is really dim to the point of almost being all black! I can see some things with some strain or added light. Please advise.

you disabled keyboard in fn mode press fn blue key and hold down and locate the little blue key on keyboard and press it release at same time if that dont work restore to earlier point using on screen keyboard and problem should be fixed

first off im amazed it can even blink bark or glow at all
laptop are scaled in DOG YEARs.
my first guess is the not tried yet, exernal VGA jack works
so only your screen is bad.
as all are now with CCFL lamps dead or its power pack.
called "inverter"
the lamps go dim, yellow ,flicker then die, all do if CCFL
best is upgrade top LED laptop and w7 and newer OS.
the BIOS pages must work or the screen is bad
seems power is ok, to me. and you.
it came with VISTA.

this is bad or the inverter card that drives is is bad if BIOS FAILs
to show in the screen, My best guess, no tests by me,
testing is the only sure way to fix problems not guessing.
why not get tech to fix it?

the year or close to the year they made Nivida chip solderball , GPUs, that all fail.
so if its got that its, doomed, and buy 3 more used mobo
and all doomed sure

the screen is just a LCD screen and a backlight
if the digital data to it is bad (GPU) then the GPU is bad.
and hits soldered down,,,
buy desktop next time, and its child's play fix.
pop a new card
or and HP 9540w, that has cards !@!! and dont FAIL.

I have the same problem with the f700. tried replacing the inverter and even the screen but its something else... HELP?

In this regard there is something happen on the video card cable underneath on the hinge of the laptop. I have also Presario laptop that has same issue that you encountered.If you can able to open the laptop's hinge to check the video cable connection then you can check on it by resetting the connnection though. If your not able to do so either to go in the computer shop or have to call HP/Compaq for assistance. Thank you.

try to jump green and any black wire from the power supply...if the fan dont work..power supply is damage..need to change..

Sounds like the power converter. The power input and the battery are single voltage. The computer requires multiple voltages which are generated by a power converter. If you have installed this motherboard, ensure the connections to the power converter are correct.

that means you might have a hardware failure. possible powersupply. check with local shop.

If you can still see a faint image on the screen, then its the inverter coil or the inverter itself which has gone bad or maybe even worked itself loose causing a bad connection.
Either way you will have to take it to PC repair shop to be looked at.
