Screen backlight is probably failing, the fact that you are getting an image suggests that the inverter is ok (although replacement is often the only way of telling).
Firstly, plug the laptop into an external monitor, if the picture is clear, this will confirm that the issue lies with the backlight or the inverter, if however it does not, then you may have issues with the onboard graphics chip beginning to fail (expensive as it will need a new motherboard).
The only other cause can be a damaged VGA lead (unlikely).
Best guess would be that the laptop screen needs replacing, as replacing the tube for the backlight is a very difficult task and not really worth the effort or expense. You can find some good 2nd hand screens now for a 15.4 laptop quite cheaply and replacement is very easy
