Like many other people I have a vertical line down the copy, using the document feeder, not the plate glass. on my HP officejet J5780 3 in one. Your advice is to clean the small glass plate. I look everywhere to find this small glass plate. Can't see one. Can you supply a picture with an arrow pointing to the small glass plate.

Open the top cover, to the right where the paper is fed is a cover. Lift that cover, clean the roller and the inside. This is where the paper is fed and read, the line is usually due to something on the roller. Clean it and you should be good to go. I had this and it went away after cleaning...

I dont have a picture at the moment but if you lift the document feeder up to expose the large plate glass, the small plate glass is normally situated at the extreme left hand side of the large plate glass.

Vertical lines when copying from feeder or glass - does not happen when printing from computer or scanning documents.

Inspect the glass below the feeder for ink or ink correction liquid remnants from previous scanned documents. Clean them out.

I have an HP Officejet 6500 wireless printer. If I scan or copy a document through the feeder the scanned or copied document has vertical lines from top to bottom. If I lay the document on the glass and...

Lift the scanner top, then look at the narrow pane of glass. There probably is a spek of dust or ink on it. Clean it with alcohol. I've had to remove the glass, due to the speck being on the undersaide of the glass.

Also, lift the ADF cover and clan the rollers with a damp cloth.

When I use the feeder either for scanning or copying, the page has a black vertical line . When I make normal copies or print outs it is fine, only the feeder makes the black line. Thank you

Under the Automatic Document Feeder is a small glass.
This glass becomes dirty, creating lines on the page.
open up the scanner cover and clean the glass

HP OfficeJet J5780 Vertical Black Line Prints when copying or scaning only. Cleaned rollers and changed black ink cartrigde. Still problem.

Have you tried cleaning the document feeders Scan Glass? (small glass under doc feeder ~ 1" by 9") Most times there is dirt spot on this glass, causing a shadow on scans and copies.
Try copying from the large glass by lifting doc feeder / platen cover and manually placing original. If no line copying or scanning manually from large glass, then small scan glass is deffenitely the culprit. Hope this helps.

Lines appear when making a copy using document feeder tray

If the lines are vertical (in the direction the ADF feeds, 11in long for 8 1/2 by 11) You can try cleaning the glass the scanner uses when it's using the document feeder. Pull up the top left part of the printer where the documents feed, there's a little rib in the middle of the side to help you do this, then simply pull up the assembly underneath with all the rollers in it, you should see about an inch of glass underneath and a centimeter long strip of white plastic on the assembly (this serves as the white background when feeding slimmer papers) Clean them both. I'd recomend any glass cleaner, just don't spray it in there, spray it onto a cloth.

Black vertical lines on faxes sent using auto document feeder

If you lift up the lid on your scanning device you will notice a glass strip about 1 inch thick and then the large area of glass used for flatbed scanning. The 1 inch strip is used for ADF scanning. Because your papper is moving across the glass strip, any dot, smudge or scratch will affect your scanning and cause verticial lines down the page. Sometimes the dot is not visible to the eye. Get some glass cleaner that has alcohol in it and thoroughly clean the glass strip and it should solve your problem. If it turns out to be a scratch on the glass then cleaning won't help.
