Computer not seeing the external Hard drive

I was on my computer today and everything was fine, then it was as if the external drive wasn't there. I tried restarting the computer, reloading the driver, looking for new hardware and still nothing. Can you tell me what's wrong?

I'm having the exact same problem, the HD worked for months, then all the sudden the other day it needs to "locate a driver?" I tried some of the solutions for the other postings, including prying open the case to make sure nothings loose, but nothing has worked for me yet! I want to see my pictures!

Try the drive on another pc - if you sill cant see it, you may have had drive head crash in the new drive and that is a write off.

A DISK READ ERROR HAS OCCURED PRESS CTRL+ALT+DELETE TO RESTART

This can mean a couple things... Your PC might have gotten corrupted by a virus, or the hard drive is going bad. Try pressing "F8" key upon boot up and see if you can get into the computer in safe mode.

If you can then go to "My Computer" and then right click on the c drive and select "properties". You will then go to the "Tools" tab and run an error check on the drive. After that you will want to try scanning your computer for any possible infections.

If you can not get the PC into safe mode then you will need to reformat the drive and reload your PC. But if you have information on the drive that you need. Your best bet then is to go out and get and external cabinet for your hard drive and a new hard drive. Put the new drive in your PC and the old drive in the external for later. Reload the PC and then copy the information off the old drive onto your new hard drive.

Best of luck...

Need to reload my drivers

Hello

To reload your drivers you will have to reload the entire operating system and here is how to do so.

Back up all of your user files, because reloading the operating system will destroy all of your data. You can use an external hard drive, thumb drive or an online backup service to save your files.

Insert the restore CD that came with your computer, then restart your PC. The computer will automatically boot and begin the restoration. You will be asked to confirm the reformatting of your hard drive during the process. The restore CD will not only reload the operating system but all of the hardware drivers as well. (If you do not have the restore CD, contact your computer's manufacturer.)

Insert the operating system CD if you do not have access to a restore CD. Shut down the computer and restart it. The computer will boot from the CD, and when the operating system menu is displayed, you will have the option to reload the operating system files. If you take this approach, you might also need to reload the drivers for your hardware by going to each manufacturer's website and downloading a driver for each device.

My external hard drive is not being recognized by my computer.

Try using another USB cable or different port on your PC. It also may be that it needs external power, Check to see if its plugged in to the wall, if it is, it may be that you need a new power supply.

It could be that for some reason it is trying to grab a drive letter that is already being used. As administrator, right click on "My Computer" > Manage > Disk Management. Change the drive letter if needed by choosing "Edit". (You should first check your iomega by connecting it to another computer to make sure it is working properly.) Good luck.

Simpletech Signature 500gb "is not accessible"

Right click on MY COMPUTER and select MANAGE.

Go to DEVICE MANAGER and expand the DISK DRIVES category on the right side window.

You should see the Simpletech drive listed under there. Delete the Simpletech drive and click on OK. Restart the computer.

Windows should re-detect the simpletech and re-install the built in drivers automatically.

External hard drive not recognized

You need to first narrow down the problem to either your PC or the external hard drive. Do you have access to any other PCs you could try connecting your hard drive to? (think friends, family, public PCs, etc)

If the hard drive works on other PCs, we know it isn't a problem with the hard drive.

If it turns out that the hard drive is fine and the PC is the problem, I would suggest going in to Device Manager and uninstalling everything USB related. Once you have done this, either reboot your PC or right-click inside device manager and "scan for new hardware". All of your USB related devices should reload their drivers automatically. You may want to try this both with and without the usb drive connected.

Another tip would be to try various USB ports.
