A/C compressors fail because the system is overcharged, not enough charge in the system. Compressor can also fail if it's started before it has a chance to cool down first.

Calculation of CFM discharge from an opening of a duct collar

There's a thumb rule in A/C air distribution. At 1 TR load, the air supply is about 400 CFM and the ideal diffuser size is 16" x 16" with an effective flow area of about 70%. Branch duct size for this outlet should be around 12" x 12".

Lingth of line

The length of line set can dramatically effect the efficiency and operation of the air conditioner. There is a science behind the design and application of the different sizes. Refrigerant carries oil in it as well as the refrigerant itself. The length can change the amount of oil that is supplied to the compressor. The length of pipe can change the indoor coil's ability to flash to vapor gases.

The instructions that came with your unit should be able to simplify this for you. There will be minimum and Maximum lengths and possibly even some graphs and tables to study.
