Enter the model of your C4200-series printer into the search box here. You can either order the cartridge from there or simply jot down the number and look for it at a local shop.
Then you will need to remove ink, clean and replace the ink cartridge as it could be damaged or faulty if this does not resolve the issue then you may have a faulty printer.
(The obvious) Replace the black cartridge. Even if ot says you have ink you could have a faulty cartridge, even if it has worked fine in the past. (The not so obvious) Clean your printheads/nozzles. Repeat the process a few times.
Black printer ink in HP Printer may fail to be recognized by the printer. Most times an error message will be sent indicating that something is wrong with the black print cartridge. Sometimes the printer may accept to print with the black ink, but the printouts may have horizontal lines and very illegible letters. In such a case a manual cleaning of the print head should be carried out. In doing the manual cleaning, one should spray Windex heavily on paper towel and wipe off the surface of the print head. http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-40171-printer-not-printing-black
We have a Photosmart C4700 series and we can only use recycled ink cartridges 2 or 3 times and then the printer rejects them. I don't know if this anwers your question at all.
There are in fact region codes, I'm in the process of getting tech support from HP right now. They want me to call in, but that costs, email tech support via the website, they should be able to help you.
There is some confusion about the 99 cartridge. The info for the C4380 says that the 99 Photo cartridge is an option, but HP's website doesn't show the 99 cartridge as compatable with the C4380. It goes from C4280 to C4385.
