I have a Cannon PowerShot S2 IS digital camera, about 5 years old. The LCD Monitor and Viewfinder both only show a black screen with some of the Dispay Icons across the top and bottom, and after a few...

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, sometimes with lines, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

All of the pictures are grainy and very dark- not usable camera at all- less than 2 years old I have re formatted the SD card, changed the batteries, and reset the camera to default settings

To fix your issue with the Canon Powershot SX110 IS Digital Camera, try cleaning the lens. A huge issue with malfunctioning pictures can be as objective as a dirty lens. If that doesn't solve the issue, try to make sure that your flash is working to its full power. If you are taking a picture in a low-light area and the flash isn't giving off a strong enough light, this will cause grainy/noisy dark photos. Lastly, try playing around the with settings on the configuration screen. Sometimes digital cameras can malfunction, even after reformatting, and will apply alternate settings from what you originally had set.

Hope this helps!

The battery you found (CR1220) is for the camera memory.IE time and date.Chances are the batteries that were installed are dead. Also check the contacts on either end of the batteries and clean if needed.

Blurred pictures

if this is digital camera then the batteries have nothing to do with blurry pictures, however replacing them could cause all of your settings to be changed back to factory default. Make sure you are in the camera's auto mode, this can be a switch of a knob, and enable the flash and you should be taking crisp photos in no time,

The lens of my Canon A710 PowerShot won't retract all the way when I turn the camera off. Then when I turn it on, the LED screen is dark. Also the shutter won't click to take a photo. Is it a total loss?

I bought a new camera (the Canon A720 PowerShot). The guy at the camera store told me it would have cost $160 to fix it the old one. I asked him AFTER I paid for the new camera. I guess I will toss the old one after I take out the batteries and memory chip.
