A blue screen appear on my laptop saying: " a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. if this is first time you've seen this stop error screen restart your computer. if this screen appears again, follow these steps: disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk fragmentation, etc.... i' ve been doing this steps like restart but how can i restart. when i turn off it will appear the screen like: safe mode, safe mode with networking, normally windows etc..... i try everything but it comes back to the original problem. i let it cool down a bit but still the same. please help me
Your windows install is screwed up. i'd dig up your Windows XP CDand pop that in and do a repair install. if it still doesnt work then i'd enter the bios setup (hit F10 on compaq boot screen) and look in there for "Hard Drive Test" and run that. be aware it will take 70 mins on a 60GB hard drive, and longer for a bigger drive. if the hard drive passes the test then you may want to boot up the XP cd and do a fresh install, opting to format the drive. be aware that formatting WILL delete anything and everything on the laptop.
if the hard drive fails the test, then obviously you need to get a replacement drive and reinstall Windows on that. if the hard drive failed, any data on it is most defenetly toast.

have you made any changes before the blue screen appear? installing a driver maybe? if you have,try to undone those changes by booting with Startup with last known good configuration (undo recent registry and driver change),use System Restore,or Roll Back device driver,Scan your computer for viruses and Return BIOS settings to their default levels,go to BIOS by pressing F2 or del exactly after you press the power button and the screen show up if it still in blue screen,that's probably that some of your system file is missing,and you need to reinstall your operating system Please let me know if it's working or not,i don't like to abandon anyone,and thanks for using fixya
When you hit F12 or whatever F key to go to the boot drive menu, make sure the cd is in and that you select CD/DVD Drive and the dvd should prompt you to hit any key or will automatically start loading for the recovery. Just tell me if you need further assistance.
Bios is not on an hard drive, is on a memory chipinside computer. Your main problem is not with Bios, but with system. On many Compaq you can start the recovery tool by pressing f10 or f11 on startup. The system recovery tool it is located on hard disk, if it does not start it had been deleted or is damaged.
In your case Windows is corrupted, that is the reason why it is freezing , and then giving the blue error screen.
You need to get a Windows setup disk and reintall Windows. If you install windows from a generic setup disk you will need to install drivers after installing. Drivers can be downloaded from HP website.
Another solution is calling the phone number listed on the user manual to contact HP. you can buy from them an original recovery CD, in this case you won't need drivers.
Otherwise you can ask a quote to a local repair shop for a system reinstall, I think it is about $80.
This is called the Blue Screen of Death (BSoD), as scary as the name sounds if your laptop isn't ancient you more than likely can save it. depending what you were doing on your pc last, installing a game or whatever, start it in 'safe mode'. it should start up just like a normal computer but with a few changes like anti virus disabled. From here you can unistall whatever you were last doing on the computer, clean it up and try get her running again, the usual stuff, try defrag the computer, right click the drive in my computer>tools>defrag now, theres also other options in there like clean up and error checking both will help. Try and save it yourself, if all this fails your computer fixing person will probly have to wipe your hard drive, in which you will loose all your data and start a fresh laptop.
