I recently brought a canon SX100IS digital camera. We are slowly reading the book and working out the functions. On taking a snap the other night a hand appeared in the right hand side of the screen, what does this mean as we cannot find anything in the book relating to this.

SD cards max out at 2GB. The SX100IS can also use SDHC cards, which max out at 32GB.

Greetings - Your Canon does not need any installation software to connect to your PC. You plug it in, it gets recognized and you can move, copy, delete photos, etc.

you have a dial on top of your camera. where you can find 2 types of shots. one is Night scene. and other is Night snap shot. Second one is better.
Note that even a small hand shake will spoil the subject. Use a tripod for night shotting with flash

Yes your camera will give images with 300dpi . You need to set the dimension as 3264 x 2448.

If this is occurring in "Auto" as you say, then the particular camera that you have is defective. If a recent purchase, return it for exchange or refund. If that's not possible, call 1-800-OK-CANON for warranty repair. The SX100 IS actually is a VERY nice camera, and this is very uncommon for a Canon camera. Unfortunately, it sounds like you somehow got one that slipped through the cracks.

Try Shutter Priority mode (Tv). Adjust the shutter time for an extended shot of several seconds or more. Of course, recommend using a tripod to do this, and using the camera's timer to take the shot to minimize camera shake.

Turn on the camera and press the DISP button once. Take the camera back for exchange with your retailer if this does not correct the problem.

All recent Canon point and shoots, including the G9, have special scene modes. There are two which would be very good for "Las Vegas at night". These are "Night Scene" (if you have a tripod), and "Night Snapshot" (no tripod needed, but less spectacular results). You may read more about them here:

If you are certain that you are understanding the functions and are doing everything right according to the book then Contact customer support at Canon- if you have had it only a short while they should replace it
