This sounds like a bad hard drive, try a fresh install of the operational system to factory setting if disc is available, if no change remove hardware and reseat it back in place, still nothing the hard drive needs to be assessed.
You could try buying a new laptop battery. Typically laptop batteries lose their luster after a year.
If the laptop is booting up to a system clock for you to enter the correct date and time, then you may also need a new CMOS battery. They're a small battery on the motherboard.
Both batteries are fairly cheap but you may want to take the laptop to a certified tech to test or replace the CMOS.
OR if the laptop is still under warranty then get Dell to do it for you.
is the crackling noise constant?
if so, your hard drive is lockup on the bootup. you have to get a new hard drive.
or you can try to reformat the hard drive, but I don't think that will help.
