It is probably jammed by something undernieth. You can try to take the screwdriver and carefully remove the spacebar button (just pull the button up, but please be carefull :) ) and then check is there something under that is jamming the space bar.

Windows XP Professional, can't log in, try to type

Which model of laptop ?

Nearly every device in your computer system can be turned off and on by accessing the Windows Device Manager with a few clicks of the mouse. It gives you plenty of flexibility and allows you to customize your computer on a whim. The Device Manager will allow you to enable your factory keyboard and mouse and disable your current ones, effectively resetting them to the default settings

Make sure that your default mouse and keyboard are plugged into your computer. Click on the Windows "Start" button in the lower right corner of your desktop. Type "Device Manager" in the "Start Search" box. Click "Device Manager" under "Programs." Click "Continue" if the Windows permission window pops up. Click the "+" next to "Mice and other pointing devices." Right-click the default mouse and click "Enable." Switch to your default mouse then right-click your other mouse and click "Disable." Click "Yes" in the warning popup window. Unplug the other mouse. Press the "+" next to "Keyboards." Right-click your default keyboard and click "Properties." Click the "Driver" tab then click "Enable." Click "OK." Right-click your other keyboard and select "Properties." Click the driver tab then click "Disable." Click "Yes" in the permission window then click "OK." Your computer is reset to the default keyboard and mouse.

Spacebar on keyboard makes my computer go to sleep mode

Sounds like your keyboard is sending the wrong signal (the one telling your PC to enter sleep mode) to your motherboard when you press space key, which (if true) would indicate it's faulty. It could also be you've contracted a virus and is playing a particularly nasty practical joke on you (let's hope that's all it does). Try connecting another keyboard to your PC and see if that helps. If it doesn't, then you'll need to clean your computer of any viruses. Try also disconnecting your mouse and see if that changes anything. If your keyboard comes with a shortcut utility software for it, run it and check there's no shortcut set on your keyboard's space bar. You've additionally specified you're not using wireless keyboard, but could you also please write what OS you're on?

My spacebar on keyboard is not separating one word from the next unless i press both spacebar and shift simultaneously.

Hello,
Go to System Preferences and select Speech, click on the tab on the right side "Text to Speech" and see if anything is checked like "Speak selected text when key is pressed". If it is uncheck it reboot and see if problem is gone. If that is not checked make sure nothing else is in that area, then try the following to reset the PRAM
If that doesn't work reboot and hold down CMD Option P R until you hear the startup chime repeat. I often let it chime 3 or 4 times to make sure that I have reset the PRAM
