Stripe on receiving fax Brother MFC 7820N

I've been told that everything I fax has a black stripe straight down the middle when received. This isn't happeining on the faxes I receive, just the ones I've sent. I have cleaned the corona wire, wiped the scanner, and blown out any dust. Is there somewhere else I can wipe/clean/adjust to eliminate this?

We also have a black stripe when using faxes but not when copying> How do we resolve please

I have the same problem with mine since I purchased it. Copies are fine, no black line but when I use the feeder to fax things, the black line shows up. I usually have to fax things without using the automatic feeder which takes forever to do because have to scan each page, otherwise the black line will show up in all the faxed pages. Same thing with copies. If I make a copy using the scanner it is fine but when I feed it through the automatic feeder to make copies, all copies come out with the black line. I think for mine, it must have something on the glass of automatic feeder portion causing this. Never have been able to fix it.

I have been having the same problem for the past year... anyone have a solution that works?

  • Anonymous Mar 30, 2009

Had the same problem for forever and just fixed it because of a helpful comment from shadishakra. There was a spec of dirt on the glass in the scanning area. Just cleaned it and no more stripe!! Boy do I feel dumb; I guess I should have cleaned it sooner... Note that there are two areas for scanning with this machine. One smaller glass area to the left which is used when paper is fed via the feeder, and the other, large area of the flatbed. Clean both areas, but anything showing up when feeding is due to the small area. Thanks!!

I had the same problem, and I just fixed it.  It was a tiny little black dot which was stuck to the glass where the document feeder passes the paper to.  First you need to figure out where the line is on paper with respect to the paper, and just carefully run your finger on the glass to see if there is something on the glass.  I removed it, cleaned the glass, and anything which I run through the document feeder is now fine.  Hope this helps.

Thank you for posting this! The solution had been staring at me every time I lifted the lid! On the very left-hand side is a 3 step explanation of how to fix this, by cleaning the glass strip right on the edge. So simple really, and how blind am I. If you hadn't posted this comment, I would never have noticed this..

Use the COPY mode on your fax machine to scan an original with only a small number of words on it. If the COPY made on YOUR fax machine has the black line on it, YOUR SCANNER is definitely the cause, and there is probably ink or correction fluid on your scanner glass, or possibly dirt UNDER the glass. The mark on the scanner may be only a tiny dot, but since the original is moving, it scans as a line, so look closely for ANYTHING on the scanner.

Does the black line appear on faxes sent to any machine or only one? If it is happening on faxes you send to different machines, and its not your scanner, the black line may be caused by one of the circuit boards in your fax. Try unplugging your fax from the phone line, and the AC power outlet. Wait 30 seconds and reconnect and turn on. Send a test fax to another fax machine . If the line is still there, try a RAM or MEMORY CLEAR to try to reset your machine. Be sure to printout ALL LISTS (speed dial, settings, etc.) BEFORE you clear any memory. All data will be erased, and your fax will be restored to factory settings.

I have had the same problem with my 7820N since I first got it. My problem is more persistant than yours, as anything I scan (fax, copy or scan to PC) has the black line down the middle. Receiving or printing is fine, so I know its the scanner. I had brought it to a service center when it was only a month old, and after having it for 1 week, I get it back and turn it on, it sees to be fixed! Then I copy something 10 minutes later and the black line is back.

I didnt have time to bring it back for service, so I lived with it. The odd thing that I realized is that if I turn the printer off for a period of time of say 10 min or more, and scan...there is no line. Then after the printer being on for about 5-10min the line is back. Seems like when it warms up? I dunno. Just thought I would share my story. I use another fax to send faxes and if I'm really desperate to scan something, I'll turn it off for a little while, then turn it on and scan real quick.

I am getting a light duplication on my copies half

The duplication problem can be either the drum or the fuser. Most likely your drum needs to be replaced. If you can measure the distance between the first print and its duplicate I might be able to help more.
