Power Supply Cables

I need to find out what each of the cables connects to. I am not sure what connect to what except for the 24 pin. Is there a certain order for the cd drive and floppy. Also, which ones connect to the hard drive

The hard drive and CDROM connect to the large flat four pin cables [there are several.] The floppy[s] connect to the tiny four pin cable that is on the same line as one or more larger four pin cables...

There is no order, just pick them in a way that they all reach without strain.

Power Connectors

"A 24-pin main power supply connector (JWP1), and three 8-pin CPU PWR connectors (JWP2 / JWP3 /JWP4) on the motherboard.

I Just bought a Corsair Cx-500W P4 ATX power supply, but I can not connect it to my Asus P7P55D-E/LX P55 LGA1156 motherboard because of to many cables(confusing)

You need to connect the 20 or 24 pin connector to the ATX power slot on your motherboard, its the long rectangle one. You will also need to connect the CPU power to the CPU power slot, that is the 8 pin one. I hope this helps.

I am replacing a motherboard with a G31-M7 TE and find that my existing power supply has a 20 pin plug consistant with the old motherboard but the new one has a 24 pin socket. Why is this and do I need to...

New motherboards have a 24-pin power connector. Here is a diagram of both plugs:

You can see that the two are almost identical. The extra 4 pins on the 24-pin connector provide extra connection points for a few voltages. Newer boards and processors need more current, and the extra pins were added to prevent overloading.

Adapter cables are available to go from your 20-pin power supply plug to the 24-pin motherboard connector. Here's one from TigerDirect, and other vendors have them as well. If you're not making other changes than replacing the motherboard, you shouldn't need more than this adapter.

If you are upgrading your processor along with the motherboard, you should probably replace the power supply too. Older power supplies are often in the 300-watt range, and this is too low for reliable operation with new processors, motherboards and video cards. A new 500 or 600-watt supply is not expensive, and would give you the 24-pin power connection the motherboard needs.

Well here is a way to check your power supply, on your hard drive connector using your volt meter and measuring from ground. this would be using one of two middle connectors it should measure +5 VDC on the red wire and + 12 VDC on the yellow wire. If these voltages are good then we got to see if the power supply is producing the -12VDC voltage. This voltage is ussed by the syustemboard on pin 14 of a 24 pin power supply. I would recommend not having your system board plugged in while measuring these votlages, but the power supply may need a load, I would plug in the cdrom.. Below are a couple of picture to explain this and a link to a website that has this documented.

dfish26_1.jpg The 24 pin main power connector was added in ATX12V 2.0 to provide extra power needed by PCI Express slots. The older 20 pin main power cable only has one 12 volt line. The new 24 pin connector added one line apiece for ground, 3.3, 5, and 12 volts. The extra pins made the auxiliary power cable unnecessary so most ATX12V 2.x power supplies don't have them. The 24 pin connector is polarized so it can only be plugged in pointing in the correct direction.

My evolution 3000 been occasionally powering down for no apparent reason for a couple of weeks. now completely died. no power at all. won't switch on or show any life.

Power Supply's have a Form Factor. (Actually only motherboards do, but most Power Supply's follow the motherboard Form Factor)

The ATX designation determines it's size, shape, and factors concerning the various power cables coming out of it, (Spaghetti), plus other concerns.

An ATX power supply shape is generally close to 6 inches long, (15.24 Centimeters), 6 inches wide, and 3-1/2 inches tall.
(8.89 Centimeters)

It is the common size and shape used for 90 percent of the personal computers made, out there.

From what I have been reading about Evesham, they used typical power supply cables used for most ATX power supply's.

Basic specifications on the Evesham Evolution 3000 desktop computer,

Power Cables:

1) Don't know if the Power Supply will have a 20-pin ATX main power cable, or a 24-pin ATX main power cable.

In reality the point is moot, because new power supply's have a main power cable which will be a 20-pin connector, or a become a 24-pin connector.

2) The Evesham Evolution 3000 specifications, state that an Intel Pentium 4 processor is used.

This means there will be a 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable, which plugs into the motherboard.

3) There will be a few 4-pin Peripheral power cables,

Hmmm.... mainly you have:
-20 or 24-pins connector, that is unique and goes directly to motherboard (powers motherboard and its components)
-4 or 8-pins connector that powers CPU
-the rest would be connectors for ROM (CD/DVD/BlueRay) and HDD devices (there are: molex and sata power conectors)

The system fails to boot up after a new power supply was added

There should also be a brand - the nVidia just relates to the chipset that the board uses, but its OK, lets check the wiring first.  If we still have trouble I'll get you to double check for the brand name.
Lets just check that you have the following plugs in place:
  1. The 24 pin plug from the PSU (blue) to your motherboard - this powers the board itself.
  2. A 4 pin 12v P4 connector plugs into the motherboard (near the CPU).  This is the CPU power.  It runs from the 8pin blue socket on the PSU.  Make sure that the end plugging into the motherboard is only 4 pin.
  3. No power cables required to run the 8600GT so the red sockets on the PSU are empty.
  4. Power cables going to all your peripherals (hard drives and CDroms).  These run from the black sockets on the PSU.
