I Found that by holding the top left cover when switching on the machine the display appears... i think i have a loose connection and i will dismantle the cover and find out.. i will let you know how i get on

Sounds like the display backlight has failed. Need to replace the display.
Ok thats different then what I understood you to mean by no display.
Have you taken the display off and just disconnected and reconnected the cables to the display. All of them that run to or are part of the display. Those mostly are communication cables for the display. Also track them back if you can to the main board and reseat them at that location. I have seen those connectors just be loose frequently when you get no message on the display but machines operate.
I am sorry , when I read your post, I assumed a simply dead display. Still possible that the display itself is bad, but since you see the display lighting the power supply is working to and on the board.
Try the connections and see what happens. If it was software related you would see gibberish. Just letters and numbers that mean nothing. Even just astrisks and solid blocks. If it was relaved to the non volitle memory the display would just show solid black blocks about a quarter inch square in about 8-10 rows.
