How to connect two vcr via scart cable over old tv

The VCR is today old technology that doesn't marry well with the latest tv sets and accessories. The best way is to connect via a scart lead.

There have been so few digital vcr's produced few households have them - most are analogue format and must either record from a set-top box, from some tv sets while watching the programme, from a dvd or dvr or anything with a scart socket...
Mostly the in-built uhf modulator is redundant and generally the machines are now only suitable for playback of previously recorded tapes, though I still find them useful for recording.

Unless the VCR has a digital tuner the only way to record off the TV will be to connect it by a scart socket and cable. However to record you would have to watch the TV show you are recording. An alternative is to get a set top box, which are fairly cheap and connect that to the VCR. Some VCR's have two scart sockets one for the TV and a spare one. You can connect the box via the spare one. When setting the recording you will have to select AV2. If the VCR has only one scart socket you might need a scart switching box.

First connect the cable box to TV using HD-cable (if connection available) or component cable (three leads) observing the colors. Connect cable box to VCR with an S-video cable or SCART if you have an S-video out scart. Connect VCR to TV with another S-video cable (round connectors) or with a scart to an S-video in scart connection. If you are in the US, the scart connections don't apply.

You don't really say what make or model is the TV or VCR. However if you have a TV with a scart socket you can get a scart lead and connect the VCR via that. If the VCR has two scarts connect it via AV1 sometimes black whereas the other might be blue. If the TV has more than one you will have to try each one, unless it says VCR on the scart socket, till you get the best picture.

If the TV has a scart socket then you should be able to connect it via a scart lead to TV from the VCR. Apart from feeding an aerial lead to the VCR first then out from it to the TV aerial socket it should work fine.

Scart cables are good at not connecting properly, chuck the old scart away and buy a good quality one!

There are several ways in which you can do this.

The first way. If your cable box has two scarts one will be label as tv and the other vcr or something similar. connect your Dvd player via scart to the vcr scart on the back of your cable box. then connect a scart from the cable box to the back of the TV.
That would be you all sorted. when you turn your DVD player on this should override your cable and display the dvd screen.

Second way. If your cable box has not got two scart ports on the back of it. Then you would have to connect both to the back of your TV. If there are not two scart ports at the back of your TV then you can purchase a scart lead splitter. I would imagine the Cheapest you could find would be on Ebay or something similar.

If your TV has no scart connection, no HDMI connection, then to be honest I would get a new set. There are plenty of good second hand models around, which will be better than your old set and come with a digital tuner built in.
As for the VCR, that should have a scart socket and so should the converter box. Once connected via the scart socket you should be be able to record the shows easily. If the converter box comes with a volume control, you might need to set that up to get it right. If the VCR has two scart sockets use the second one to connect the box. Use the first to connect to the TV for viewing your recordings only.
If it has only one scart, then look around on Amazon for one of these scart switching boxers.

if you connect via SCART lead, then you will need to select your AV channel or channels on your tv.

If its via arial, you will have to tune your tv to find it.

does your television have multiple scart connectors? Sometimes some models have only 1 connector that will accept RGB signals... Another thing you can check are VCR settings - scart component video output is not "official" and hence you might need to look at some of the setting if you need to enable it. Another possibility is that your scart cable may not have your rgb signals connected (based on wikipedia reference: "not all SCART cables make use of all the pins, often leaving out RGB signals. In many cases there is also no way to see which type of signal that is currently displayed on the TV set."
