Philips FlatTV Black Screen 30PF9946D/37

I have a Philips flat screen, model number 30PF9946D/37. After being on for a few minutes the screen goes blank. I still have audio and the green light stays on. I've narrowed it down to two possible problems. It is either a bad temperature sensor (most likely), or it is the power supply causing it to short. I put the power supply board with all the heatsinks in the freezer over night and hooked it up today and it worked for a really long time. Then I turned it on after the screen inevitably went black and it lasted for a few seconds. This leads me to believe it is a bad temperature sensor, but I don't know where the temperature sensor is or where to get a new one. It also could be the power supply, as I have seen others with this issue. Any ideas? I see a lot of these questions on these boards with no answers, so I'm crossing my fingers. Also it is out of warranty and don't tell me, "Don't buy a Philips," or "Get a CRT." Thanks very much but this is what I bought and I would like it to work.

I have the same problem and was told by my local TV repair shop I needed a new LCD panel (at $2000!!!) which I don't believe for a moment since the panels themselves rarely fail. After digging around on the net, I came across a posting from "Arfa Daily" on the website which points to either the backlight inverter board or the power supply. So far, it is the only intelligent thing I've found that makes any sense. If anyone follows this up and sucessfuly repairs your set, please let me know! ....Acepayday

I will re-post his/her answer here but to read it yourself goto:

Is this a common problem with these?

Thank you!
Could be ps board.

It's a common problem with all LCD TV sets. First, try unplugging the
display panel's backlight inverter board. It is very common for these to
fail and cause the set to revert to standby. Otherwise, it's most likely
that the PSU itself is faulty - also very common.

Examine it *very* carefully for bulged electrolytics on the secondary side.
Note that these may be 'hiding' under bits of heatsink, so look carefully.
Also, check all large and heatsink-mounted devices, for bad (lead-free !!)
joints, which is another common cause of your described symptoms. Other than
this, you're a bit 'on your own' with LCD sets. There are other possible
causes, such as bad sound output chips, but if you really do have a power
supply problem that's not one of the things described, then you will
struggle to get to the bottom of it without schematics, and an intimate
knowledge of switchmode power supplies. These LCD ones are infested with
monitoring circuitry for output voltages and over-current conditions, and
they all work on the standby supply, so if *any* unexpected condition is
detected either at startup, or during use, the standby supply is momentarily
stopped, which causes the system control micro to reset back to its 'sleep'
condition, removing the 'power on' signal to the power supply. Depending on
the set, that may then be an end to it until you try to bring it out of
standby again, or it may just keep trying on its own, causing a flashing
power light.

If you can prove which board is causing the trouble, you might want to
consider just replacing that board. PSUs and inverters for many sets, can be
found astonishlingly cheap on the 'net and e-bay sometimes.

How can i fix my Philips model 42PFL5432D/37 Flat screen TV that powers on, but no picture.

The main board to your TV is faulty. It is best to contact the authorized service center for Philips; because, it will be very difficult to get the main board to Philips brand TVs, and after the replacement, a firmware update too will be necessary. This is a skilled work.

Enter the exact Model Numbere in the search text field.

First verify the exact Model Number of your TV. Mine is a 42PF7220A/37.

go to:

On this page I found listed under "Software2.gif & drivers" the Firmware Upgrade Software 42PF7220A/37 v1.5.0.0

I downloaded the compressed file and extracted it to a USB Flash Drive2.gif.
After you extract the file you will have 2 files...."autorun.upg" and a "readme.txt".
Print out the readme file the delete it off the USB Flash Drive2.gif
Make sure the USB Flash Drive2.gif has only one file on it (autorun.upg)

Make sure the TV is turned off.
Put the USB Flash Drive in any of the USB ports on the TV.
Turn the TV power on with the Power Button on the righthand side of the TV.
The TV will display an Update screen.
Let the TV run through all 3 processes.
Turn the TV off and remove the USB Flash Drive.
Power the TV back up.
Hopefully the Updates fixed the problem.....

HDMI quit working I use this tv for a PC monitor, HD satellite viewing, and XBOX 360. I was having intermittent problems with the HDMI audio bleeding in to the other inputs. Sometimes if for instance I turned on the PC, I could hear the audio from the HDMI output on the satellite receiver through the TV speakers. Other times, I might just hear a crackle in the audio when in PC mode. If I switched back and forth between HDMI and PC inputs a couple of times, both issues would go away. I tell this just as background to what happened next. Since I have my PC hooked to the VGA input on the TV, I have been forced to manually switch the HDMI input from the Satellite receiver to my XBOX 360. (Sorry, I was too cheap to buy the $100 switch). Anyway, I usuall make this switch hot (TV on, Satellite receiver on, but XBOX off. This system although a pain, was working until yesterday. I was watching HD satellite, when I decided to play XBOX. I switched the HDMI cable, but when I turned the XBOX on, it wouldn't start up. I immediately assumed my XBOX had crapped out , but when I switche the HDMI cable back to the satellite, the TV would not recognize the signal. I have since tried the XBOX and satellite on another tv with HDMI, and both still work fine. I am thinking that some sort of switch in the tv has gone out, but I don't know. Should I just junk this TV for a new 1080P? My problem with doing that is that I use PIP with the PC on one side, and HDMI on the other. This tv does that, but I can't find another tv that does.
