If you have a blower and electronic gas control on your AO Smith water heater, then reading the manual for your specific product is essential for troubleshooting the problem.

As you know, tank-type gas water heaters require periodic inspection and cleaning of burner parts and combustion chamber.. The manual is important for giving instructions and advisories to the homeowner and technical specialist.

If you have ordinary direct vent water heater with mechanical gas control the following link has some troubleshooting resources that might help:

Pilot light is working but cant get heating or hot water

If your pilot is lit, and you have valve turned from pilot to ON, and thermostat is up on warm or hot, and you still don't have main burner on, then you have bad gas valve (the square thing with temperature and on/off/pilot). These unscrew from water heater and can be replaced, but keep in mind that they go directly into tank, so shut off water and drain unit first!

Pilot light keeps going out during hot days

Solution is probably better ventilation to gas water heater.
On hot days, heat and lack of ventilation can cause pilot outage.
Hot air causes oxygen molecules to move farther apart, and combustion is no longer supported so pilot goes out.

I have a Rheem PG50T9A gas hot water heater. We had hot water this morning. When I came home the pilot light was out and won't stay lit. Any ideas?

Hopefully just the thermocouple. The thermocouple is the small rod right next to the pilot light. The flame on the pilot heats up the thermocouple and keeps the gas valve on. You can replace it yourself. The thermocouple will be connect by a small nut on the underneath side of the valve, and you will have to pull the thermocouple out of the pilot assembly. Not an expensive part, you can get it at any hardware store. Hope this helps you .

Adjust pilot light on hot water heater

On most water heaters there is no adjustment to pilot light. About the best you can do is clean pilot and burner. If you are having trouble keeping pilot light lit then I would replace the termocouple.

Pilot keeps going out after it cycles a few times

Hot water heaters that have problems with pilot lights going out are usually fixed by adjusting or replacing the thermocouple. The thermocouple is the brass tube that is in or near the flame of the pilot light. The thermocouple acts as a valve to allow the gas to flow to the pilot light. If the thermocouple begins to go bad, it may shut the gas flow off to the pilot light. There could be other gas supply issues, but this is about the least expensive first step for the home owner. REMEMBER, you are working with gas. Take your time and be safe or have a professional replace the thermocouple.

M# 640HORT4 s# H07A090378---MY Pilot Light wont

Hi,
First thing is to replace the thermoscouple. When you light it you get it a bit hotter then normal. You turn on the main burner which keeps it hot. Then when it goes back to just pilot the flame is not hot enough to hold the pilot valve in.
Replace the thermocouple and you will be fine...

Natural gas hot water heater not stying lit

Probably a bad solenoid in the gas valve. Higher voltage of a new thermocouple keeps it open longer but it still fails over a period of time. Look into a new gas valve for the water heater.

Water wizard 10P pilot light keeps going out

If the thermocoupler is defective the gas to everything is shut off. The coupler is the bulb that sits ib the pilot flame If it doesn't heat up it will sense no pilot and shut the gas off. They don't cost much and are easy to change. Good Luck, Ned
