Akb error signal produced and TV goes to shut-down state

Wow, you know your stuff!

"AKB is White-Balance signal and it is not proper or maintained in your TV. So error signal produced and TV goes to shut-down state."

Is this something I can fix by resetting something?

1) I have a Sony KV-32FS13 that has a green tint in the picture. Does any oneknow how to access the service menu for this model? I tried other adjustments and I can't get rid of the annoying green...

Code 5 is "AKB error". AKB, or auto kine bias, is a cicuit that monitors the three color guns of the picture tube (red, green and blue) and tries to adjust them for proper color balance. If it can't, the picture is blanked (usually) and the timer/standby light blinks 5 times. When the color drives aren't balanced, you see a color tint in the picture like you're describing.

There might be a problem in the AKB circuit, or the picture tube may just be old enough that the AKB circuit has run out of adjustment range. If the tube is at fault, you should consider replacing the set. A new tube will cost nearly as much as a new 32-inch LCD TV, and you'll need to pay someone to install it and set it up. There are special tools required to perform the convergence which gets the color guns aligned with the face of the tube so they hit the right colors.

If you'd like to try tinkering with the service menu adjustments, this site explains how to access the menu and gives a list of settings.

The tv is at least 17 years old.The blinking red light blinks 5 times ,then the tv picture goes off . The voice is still on

Five blinks is the error code for an AKB (auto kine bias) error. What this means is that the set isn't able to balance the three color guns (red, green and blue) of the picture tube properly, and it's blanking out the screen.

To get the proper colors, the signals for the three colors need to be balanced, and Sony sets have circuitry to do this automatically. Other brands don't, and when they go out of balance you see a picture that starts to show tinting or colors that are off. As the picture tube ages, it gets harder to adjust the balance until finally the AKB circuit can't anymore, and poof, the picture goes away. With a 17-year-old tube, it's not surprising.

There isn't anything that can be done to fix the picture tube, it would need to be replaced. But the cost of the tube and the work required to get it set up after installation makes it completely uneconomical to repair this TV. A new picture tube is nearly $200. Then special tools are required to set the tube up (a process called convergence), so you'd need to find someone to put it in, and possibly pay to have the old one disposed of. A new 32-inch LCD set is around $350 now. Treat yourself to a new one.

My KP-51HW40 clicks off after running for a period. The red power light blinks when it goes off but screen stays dark. When TV is shut off for a while it restarts and runs fine. The "On"...

Hi,
KP-51HW40 shuts off due to incorrect white balance and blue arch lines is an evidence of that incorrect white balance. I hope tv standby red light would flashing 5 times then 3 seconds pause and again 5 times when tv shuts down.
This is rear projection tv that has three picture tubes (red-green-blue) inside to generate picture that projected at front screen. These three picture tubes must be drive with correct drive voltage to produce good picture of each color.
Solution for your tv problem is Screen Voltage adjustment that can be done easily if you are handy with electronics stuff repair.
Let me know your expertise level to guide you more and if you feel unconformable by tv repair then local tv repairman will help you to adjust white balance in tv.
Hope these info will help you.
Let me know if you have additional questions.
Thanks.

My screen keeps losing the red colour

not absolutly sure but it sounds like one of the crt's are starting to fail. Sony has a white balance circuit that constantly will attempt to correct for white balance errors, if it has a hard time fixing the white balalnce what you describe can happen. Durring these events your tv's power button can blink in repeating pattern of 5 blinks indicating an akb or auto white balance error. Eventually the picture may flicker on and off or the tv will shut down all togeter with a 5 blink error. But i cannot be sure without looking at it myself. There are other causes aswell; focus block, or a crt driver can cause simular issues. But given the age of this set i feel it is a better chance one of the crt;s are going bad. But again it could be the other things i mentioned.

Tv keeps turning itself off and the white in the picture looks alittle off.

To get the right colors, especially a plain white, requires the right mix of red, green and blue from the picture tube. Sony TV sets have a circuit called AKB that automatically keeps the picture tube balanced by adjusting the signals to it. If that balance can't be achieved it shuts off the picture. This may due to tube aging so one of the color guns is too weak to adjust, or failure of parts in the AKB circuit itself. If the sound stays on and the power light starts blinking when the picture goes off, this is likely why.

On the other hand, if the set is turning off completely with no picture, sound or power light, the set may have power supply problems or defective parts in the picture tube high voltage circuits.

Since there are several possible causes, this set needs to be checked by a technician who can diagnose the problem and decide what needs to be done. It's not a simple thing I can point to and say "change this part". If the picture tube is the cause, it's better to replace the set. Otherwise get an estimate, then decide whether to fix or replace.

Sony Wega Kv-36XBR250 screen blinking

I have seen this flashing before, this could be an indication that the picture tube is weak, what happens is that if the white balance is off there is a circuit called akb it monitors the kathode of each gun and if they are not in balance it will attempt to balance it out. if it can't the picture will begin to flash, sometimes in some models the power light will blink 5 times. On some models the power light will only flash if the tv gives up trying to compinsate for white balance and shuts off compeletely. If you see the tv shutting off with 5 blinks then you know for sure it is time for a new set.

'standby' mode and akb error number

AKB 66 in self diagnostic test means...TV goes to standby (shut-off) for AKB problem 66 times. AKB is White-Balance signal and it is not proper or maintained in your TV. So error signal produced and TV goes to shut-down state.
Regardnig Standby button, its available on remote only. If you push TV Power switch, TV will switch ON, push it again to OFF TV. Power Button on remote set TV in standby status and you dont need to push power button of TV itself.

Actually TV system processor waits to get proper white balance signal and then it opens VIDEO MUTE signal for picture presentation. Here we think TV takes much time in giving picture.

Hi Im Very Interested In Your Outcome........with the KP-61HS10 Problem

· 5 times, Diagnosis: White balance failure (Not balanced) Possible causes: Video out (IC7101, 7201, 7301) is faulty (CR, CG, CB board), CRT drive (IC309) is faulty (A board), G2 is improperly adjusted. Symptoms of the problem: No raster is generated, CRT cathode current detection reference pulse output is small.

AKB is a color balance circuit. It stands for Automatic Kathode Balance and is used in the video circuitry to keep the white balance in the proper level when dosed with color signals that tend to saturate the video level.

It is part of the "jungle IC" in Sony sets and is very important to the overall function of the color processing system.

The repair probably requires some surgery on the jungle chip if not its replacement. Cost of repair could be anywhere from a few dollars to $200 for the new chip.

It will require a service tech with good experience to know about this function, which is quite esoteric in tv engineering principles.

The only suggestion I have before you call in a tech is to do the hard reset (unplug for at least 4 hours) and the vibration check for loose connections or cold solder joints (by whacking the set with your hand or fist with enough force to vibrate the connections inside for bringing them back to life).
