Hi jason_pri778,

This seems to be a consequence of either a dirty lens , or a bad lens in your Blu-Ray Player.

  • I would recommend you to get a disc cleaner , and clean the lens of your Blu-Ray player by playing the cleaner disc in your drive.
  • an e.g. of a blu-ray disc cleaner is in the below link :-
  • http://amzn.to/kYp7yh
  • Now , after cleaning your drive's lens, try to play a disc in your drive and check if it works, if it does, then your problem is resolved.
  • If still the problem persists , then I would recommend you to get your blu-ray player replaced if it's under warranty/guarantee or get it repaired if it costs quite less than a new blu-ray player.

Hope this helps ..:) Your feedback would be appreciated.

I can't find the manual eject hole. how close to the bottom? is the E very big?

The manual eject button for the Sony BDP-S550 is located on the top right edge on the front of the of the player.

The manual for the Blu-ray player is located here...
http://www.docs.sony.com/release/BDPS550_US.pdf

Also, located below is a picture of the Sony BDP-S550. If you look on along the edge of the top right on the front of the player, you will see a button with the eject logo on it.

Will play dvd's fine, but when loading a blu ray disc it stops loading after the "federal warning" regarding piracy. Other blu ray disc finally loaded but took several mins to start playing

You have a Laser Pickup Assembly problem, The blue ray disc require higher precision and velocity to show the higher resolution that is demanded when it plays. One possible solution, and it is a long shot, clean the laser pickup lens with a Q-Tip and rubbing alcohol failing that, only choice replace the assembly or buy another machine.

Message reads " unknown disc"

It sounds like your player needs a new firmware update; not to worry this is easy and keeps your player up to date with changing software technology for blu-ray discs.

Go to http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?upd_id=6154&os_id=99&mdl=BDPS550

At this location you can download the update and burn it to a disc that you insert in the player. The player will then do everything automatically that is required to get you the newest update made by Sony.
If however you do not have the ability to make this disc, navigate that same page for simple instructions on how to get a disc for free from Sony that has your update on it already. They ship to you pretty quickly and for free as well.

There are also software updates as well but probably do not pertain your problem but could be needed in the future. Here is the user manual.

Check page 54. http://www.docs.sony.com/release/BDPS550_US.pdf
