Re: Dont have windows xp insall
If you can get the machine to start up, download the service pack 2. The sp2 install should fix the problem. If you can't get the machine to start up, then you will have to acquire an XP disc in order to fix it.

You need to install the Windows operating system first.
Then you need to check what drivers that are missing or not working.
Then you need to download the drivers for your model laptop. You will need to get onto the Internet from a working computer to do this.
You can go to the Compaq/HP WEB site to download the latest drivers for your model laptop that suit your particular Windows operating system (ie, Windows XP, vista etc.). Go to www.compaq.com
Is this XP?
Do you have the XP cd or the recovery cd's. This needs to be fixed by performing a Windows repair. missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\system"means that the OS,XP, is missing an essential file to run.
Or it could mean that your hard drive is failing. Is the hard drive noisey?

You have to completely reinstall the Operating System on your laptop at this point but I would re-install either Windows 2000 or XP since you will have less problem with wireless drivers, printer drivers, plug ins, etc. Make sure you have a valid Windows CD with serial numbers. After that place Windows XP CD into CD-ROM and Reboot. And you dont have to worry about converting to fat32 as Windows 2000 or XP is already a fat32 file system. Read the prompts when it comes up and answer with appropriate answers..
It would seem that your CD drive is not reading completely your installer CDs hence you can not complete the install procedure. Your best bet may be to temporarily replace with a known good/operation until installation has completed.
The 1386 should read I386 and is normally in D:\ which is the CD drive and is a folder in the Win XP installer.
Good luck and kind regards.
