Onkyo TX-28 Reciever memory function not working

The memory function for the FM tuner on my older Onkyo TX-28 is not working. It will hold the stations in memory while turned on and even if you turn it off and turn it back on. However, if you leave it off for a while it will loose the stored stations. Can I fix this fairly easily?

Same problem. When I program the radio tuner presets, they disappear when the power is turned off. The presets used to work. Unit was in storage for 4 years and now presets don't stay programmed after power is recycled.

The same problem is in my Onkyo TX-V940, it does not keep the preset stations, in both cases, AM and FM. It was working normaly but suddenly that function got lost.

I have the same problem with my Onkyo TX-28. I think it might be a battery somewhere in the unit - I took the cover off and looked but I couldn't find it. I thought it might be using a battery like a watch battery. Worked for years and in the last year or so stopped. Thanks

Replace super capacitor in the front board (C712) with part # 598-EDLF473A5R5C .47F 5.5V form Mouser Electronics. I did. It worked.

Thanks for the tips. My Onkyo TX-27 lost its memory years ago. The Super Capacitor was at the bottom. Had to remove the bottom cover, and also the front face plate (and a small circuit board containing a bunch of push button switches) in order to gain access. Then, it was easy to de-solder the Memory Backup Cap. I ordered the replacement. Fingers crossed. P.S. There were some typos in the previous posts. The capacitance is 0.047F (i.e. 47 millifarads, or 47,000 microfarads), and the number on the schematic is C712, not C172. I tried to upload a picture, but Fixya wouldn't let me. It was easy to find & download the Service Manual, which also helped.

FOUND IT!! Memory problems on a TX28 (and others I guess). There is no battery in these units (unlike computers). The guilty part is a capacitor called a Memory Backup Capacitor. I have a Onkyo TX28 and a Yamaha tuner with the same problems. As previously pointed out in earlier postings, it is part C172 in the TX28. It is a black polarized Cap that looks like a small drum, (like a button battery actually). The refs are 0.047 farads, 5.5 volts SUPER CAPACITOR. I took mine out of the TX 28 and it shows some leakage. It is on the top part of the front-end board. Is can be de-solded from the top (no need to remove circuit board, just the top cover). It costs about a buck fifty. Order online, replace and resolder.....VOILA......

There is no sound coming no matter what source

Have you checked the speaker select switch on the front of the receiver? "A" "B" or "A +B" or "Off". Sounds simple, but it happens! If you still have an issue post a comment and I can help you troubleshoot some more.

Tuner Omits No Sound - Onkyo TX-SR605 7.1 Channels Receiver

Make sure your receiver is hooked up to proper AM and FM antennae. Try switching to AM, scan stations. If you hear AM static and/or weak signals the problem could be antennas are not hooked up. FM has AFT which blocks out weak or noisey stations and you wont hear anything without ant.

Onkyo tx 902

I have a TX-902 owners manual.
It states:

Classified Memory Function. The memory can be divided for different users or programs of stations.
How to classify stations. With this model, six classes (Class A to F) are available and stations can be memorized in any class. A total of 30 stations can be memorized in any class. A total of 30 stations can be memorized.

1. Tune in the desired station.
2. Press the MEMORY button. The MEMORY indicator will flash for 8 seconds.
3. Press the desired Classified Memory button (one of buttons A to F). The station is memorized in the selected class with the memory number which is the smallest of the unoccupied numbers in the class.

By repeating the operations above, up to 30 stations can be memorized. Any more will produce "FULL" notice.

How to cancel memorized stations:
Retrieve the class number you want to cancel and then press the MUTE/MODE button while holding down the MEMORY button. Another station can be memorized with the memory number which has been cancelled.

Hope this helps.

Subtitle Problem: Onkyo TX-sr605

The only remote that will definitely turn the sat subtitles on/off is the sat remote. The other subtitle buttons on the other remotes refer to the DVD subtitles and the subtitles generated by the tuner in the tv. The subtitle option is greyed out on the tv because you are not on the tv tuner.
