Hi,
You didn't mention if the dvd was working before or it's new.

Now, you have 2 options to try:
1) Try to open the same DVD on other DVD-Reader. If it was read, then the dvd is unreadable on your laptop, because it's bad, or the DVD-Reader have problems, OR

2) Try other DVD on your laptop, if it was read, then your DVD-Reader can't read all types of DVDs, if not, then the dvd is bad
Tell Us your results, please
Good Luck

My Westinghouse SK-26H590D widescreen dvd combo won't play dvds. You can insert one but it will display "no disk".2 disks were jammed in the dvd slot and were removed(kids).I have a feeling it must have...

Most likely the laser lens was damaged when the 2 disks were jammed in. You must open the tv and check the status of the laser head and its lens, if it's faulty it will have to be replaced. Fortunately this is an unexpensive part.

Dirty DVD Drive?

You can clean your DVD Drive by inserting the Disk Cleaner its either dry or liquid cleaner. If you don't have a disk cleaner just purchase it in the store near in your neighborhood. In that way you can clean the DVD Drive Laser eye and make it possible to read another disk next time you used. Usually it takes 15 minutes the standard cleaning time if you are cleaning the DVD Drive to ensure that it is properly cleaned. Also if it doesn't work then probably you can find a technician and let it check to the technician. I hoe that the laser eye of your DVD Drive is not damage due to some disk you inserted earlier.

Hope this recommendation helps solved your problem.

Does not recognize/play DVD - shows "NO DISK"

If you are good at repairs.dismantle the Disk drive unit carefully from the main carriage and if the Optical lens reading unit has got a drive P C B ,then desolder the PCB so that you have only the CD mechanism on your table, with a Digital Multimeter check the Ohmic values of both the Spindle motor and Sled motor. the resistance should read between 4.5 ohms and 8ohms any value beyond this means that the drive signal voltage is not enough to move /rotate the disc and optical-pickup in syncronisation.you can get the drive-motors replaced,or replace the CDM assly available off the shelf.
this should solve the problem.hundreds SONY DVD players are running with this remedy.

Non- system disk or disk error

This means it cannot read the HDD in the machine. Have you left a disk in the CD/DVD slot or a usb drive in one of the usb ports?

You may have to insert your operating system disk in the CD/DVD drive and do a repair installation.
