I'm told by Onkyo Tech support that the IR receiver on my Onkyo TX-NR708 is defective. It will not accept any commands from the remote. I purchased in January 2011 and they want me to send it to Michigan to be fixed as there is not a local Tech. Can I purchase this part myself and install it? If so, how much is it and where can I get it?

SOURCE: Onkyo remote won't control Samsung components.

I got an Onkyo RC-717M remote control. It is the remote that comes with the Onkyo TX-SR706 receiver. It is a learning remote. When i entered the cde for the Samsung Blu-Ray it did the same thing as the other remotes I got from Onkyo, the pause, next / previous track buttons wouldn't work for the Samsung BD-P3600. I used the learning function of the new remote and programmed it to work. It works ok now but it sure was a hassle to get it done. In fairness i should have called Onkyo support but their support hours don't match my schedule.

I suggest that you contact Logitech to see if the remote is replaceable. are you out of your warranty period? (This is 90 Day free support and 1 year for the Warranty period) Also, when contacting them, have this information ready:

The PID of the remote:
*found under the battery.
The P/N of the remote:
*also found under the battery.
The PID of the RF Wireless Extender:
The P/N of the RF Wireless Extender:
Full Name:
Phone number:
Street:
City/Town:
Country:
Zip/Postal Code:

also let them know that you have already updated the firmware.

Can you use an Onkyo RC-771M remote control to operate Onkyo receiver TX-SR502 ?

Unfortunately, the RC-771M remote doesn't control the TX-SR502. It will only work with these Onkyo models: TX-NR1008 and TX-NR808. The RC-567M is the one for the TX-SR502; replacement remotes that are exact replacements are still available from various places including Amazon.com .

Since the TX-SR502 was released in ~2004, that replacement remote probably won't control other devices that were released in 2004 or later. Onkyo changed its IR code programming before the TX-NR1008 was released in ~2010 and the RC-771M can't communicate with the older receiver. The manuals for the receivers listed above are still available from Onkyo on the product page under the Downloads tab.

I wish that I had better news for you.

I have tx-nr708 the sound quit working I have tried defalt reset it worked the first time until I turned it off and back on all functions seem to work except no soundany help or go buy something else

It sounds like the unit was disturbed by a power surge or blackout. Part of the controllers circuit was compromised and out of sync. The parts may be more expensive than a replacement unit.

Replace the IR receiver diode on the front panel. Try HERO HIM602H from farnell.com, i used that one for my TX-DS 777. (i guess 575 using same stuff)

Not responding to remotes

I've owned an Onkyo DS696 receiver for 5+years. Every once in a while (when it was on for a long time?) the receiver would not respond to the remote. At first it could be "fixed" by a simple power cycle. It got worse over the years, and finally the unit would not respond to the remote at all. After reading a post here that made perfect sense, my husband and I opened the unit up, and (even thought the solder at the IR connection LOOKED fine, we resoldered it. (He knows how to do these things expertly). We screwed the unit back together and VOILA! it works perfectly now. Even if you don't know how to solder, if you brought it to a repair shop and told them exactly what the issue was and how to fix it - you can save your sanity and the unit. The solder joint I'm talking about is directly behind the IR on the front daughter board.

Remote doesn't operate reciever

Hello Fixya customer,

Thank you for your question.

Please determine if the "Audio" button is actually working.... after pressing the audio button, can you still control the DVD, if not then the remote has switched to the Onkyo. Although, this is not 100% conclusive, unless you have a 2nd remote to test the Onkyo with, it provides a sound basis to proceed.

Assuming the remote is transmitting and the IR receiver on the front of the Onkyo is not otherwise blocked, likely faults include the IR receiver, input to the Micro processor, and the Micro processor.

The most probable fault is the IR receiver.

Thank you for using Fixya, and if I can help you further, please let me know.

Cannot turn on by remote controller. Want to

Ok, here is my little spin on remote controls.
Sometimes they can be overloaded with commands and lock up the processor that is inside the unit.
The remote can be saved.
1. Remove the batteries and press every button on the remote control and then install new, not the batteries you took out, but new batteries and see if that works.
2. If step one does not work, then you can remove the batteries and unfold a small paper clip and bend it into a U shape and use it to touch the contacts on both ends of the battery contacts together and clear the memory.
3. Test the remote control, if you have a camcorder or a digital camera, and a cell phone will work. Point the remote at the device and press any button, you should be able to see the IR (Infrared LED) lighting up on the display.
If after all of these procedures are followed and you still do not have command of the device that you need to control. You still have more options.
Either replace the remote control with a new or compatible one, I use 1-800-remotes, www.remotes.com.
Or have the device that you are trying to control diagnosed by a technician and see if the remote IR receiver in the unit has gone bad.
I hope that this helps you with your remote issues and as always, Thank you for using FixYa.
