I recently purchased a ccd barcode scanner with usb. am i supposed to have certain software yo use this on my comp? the manual is not clear on what i have to do.

Some barcode readers need no software. Just place the cursor in the box where the information in the bar code has to extracted and then use the barcode reader. That's just it!

the USPS barcode is the GS1 128 (Code128) that will help you by activating accoring to the manual. Please be sure that you enable all lenghts of the Code128 barcode. That is probably the issue.
Your computer will automatically install your usb for phone, camera, scanner and all the devices that uses usb. No need to purchase any software. Thanks
Normally, these scanners need no software, as they simply send a series of digits to the active text box. Try opening notepad or word and scanning any barcode. It should type the number itself.
1. Go to Start>> Right click My Computer>> Manage>> Device Manager
2. Expand the USB Controller section
3. Right click and Uninstall all of the listed USB devices
4. Reboot the system
Hello schol61. The extra '0' at the beginning of the scan is called a "lead character". Usually it is standardized by the scanner, meaning that it would do it for all scans. Unfortunately, I don't have a manual and can't find one for this particular unit. But, if you do then I would suggest having a look in it for any configuration barcodes that have something to do with a "lead character". Some scanners do have lead character settings for each barcode symbology they read. I hope this helps. Good luck!
The host type are the Interafces which are supported by the scanner directly (no adapter needed). And the Synapse adapter can even an old scanner connect to new interfaces like USB.
As you state you have the adapter for keyboard wedge. You would just need to download the Reference Guide for the "Synapse Smart Cable" at support.symbol.com a configure it acccording to your connection parameters.
if you have the Keyboard Wedge - no drivers needed , USB and RS-232 drivers are needed for windows and your software must support this type. here is a site I googled with drivers http://www.usb-port.com/downloads.html
