Four things that could cause this. 1- power supply, check it for the proper output with an ohm meter, 2- bad battery, try starting with the supply only, 3- bad memory chip or slot, remove the memory, and try each chip one at a time in each slot, 4- failed power management system on the motherboard. Unfortunately, a failed power management system or chip is common with these, and the motherboard will have to be replaced in order to fix it.

My ibm thinkpad a21m will not turn on and a green light just flashes on it

The green light flashing is actually a diagnostic code, IBM should have what the flashes mean on their web site.

I once worked on the the exact same model and the green light was flashing. The owner bought a new Motherboard off of ebay and I installed it and the computer then worked fine.

I am not saying that it is the motherboard, it could be an issue with battery or the AC adapter as well.

Try removing the battery and powering on the computer while it is plugged in. If possible try a different AC adapter.

The Lenovo web site is where you can find support for your system but I was not able to find any documentation regarding diagnostic codes.

While I was not able to find that specific model of laptop, I was able to locate the CDRW Bay and based on my research this bay only supports the following models. Though it may look the same and even have the same interface, if it is not in the supported model list, it will not properly function.

Supported Media Types:
  • CD-ROM
  • CD-R
  • CD-RW
  • DVD-ROM
Compatible with:
  • IBM Lenovo ThinkPad R50
  • IBM Lenovo ThinkPad R50e

  • IBM Lenovo ThinkPad T60
  • IBM Lenovo ThinkPad T60p
  • IBM Lenovo ThinkPad X40 series (X series media slice or Ultrabase required)
  • IBM Lenovo ThinkPad X41 series (X series media slice or Ultrabase required)
  • IBM Lenovo ThinkPad T30, X30, X31, R40 series (2366, 2367, 2884, 2885, 2681, 2682, 2683, 2896, 2722, 2723, 2724, 2897, 2672, 2673 - when installed with the optional ThinkPad Slim Drive adapter for the UltraBay 2000 or X series UltraBase or Media Slice)
