Your drive may not be compatible with -rw disks. Try using +rw. They are totally different.

also i am having a similar issue with vista with burning dvds. I have to set it on 4x or it fails around 90 % up to 99%. Lower your max burn speed.

Dvd drive not detected

Try unistalling the cd drive using your device manager. After removing it from there reboot and see if it is correctly identified and installed by Windows. If not you can manually install the driver or firmware from the drive manufacturers website. Hope this helps.

Not able to burn dvd

Hello,
Some dvds have different dyes and as such some dvd rws wont recognise them, i had this problem with my new laptop and I only discovered it when i tried to burn back up discs. generally dvdr- are more suited for burning from your computer, you could try using differnt blank dvds AONE and RI-DISC are good discs, if you are unsure ask at your local pc shop ,if your in Glasgow Priceless computing offer good advice and carry a large selection of dvds, I would avoid the pound shop as the quality of their dvds is poor, should the problem persist take the dvdrw back to the shop where you bought it from, I hope that you are lucky.
Have you tried using MAGIC DVD RIPPER ? this is a program that allows you to copy dvds to your hard drive in dvd quality and you can then burn them to disc using nero, you get a free trial of this program from magicdvdripper, its good if you rent a dvd and want to keep a copy, anyway please let me know how you get on.

Best wishes.

Wont boot

go to BIOS and enable the secondary drive auto detect.
if you manaully set the drive to primary, secondar. the system should be able to detect it as you have set it. if you select cable select or auto. the sytem will put the drive connected to the end of the IDE cable as primary.

Problem in running dvds

are you sure it reads dvd's ? If it does it should have a dvd logo.

If thats not it Laser may not be working correctly and you will probably need to replace disc drive.

nowadays you can find them real cheap and are easy to install.

Check that the writable DVDs you are using are compatible (+/-) with your Sony DVD-RAM.
Go to Windows Explorer and check to see if the Sony drive is visible. It may not be connected or the Jumper switch may be set incorrectly.
Check you have drivers installed, take a look in Hardware manager.
Sometimes, it's a little difficult to copy CDs and DVDs when you have more than one burning suite installed - for some reason, they 'just don't get along'. Try uninstalling any suites other than Nero.
Or it may just be that your Sony CD-RW drive is just that, and your DVD-RW drive is just that. So it wouldn't be possible to write DVDs on the CD-RW and CDs on the DVD-RW? Though I would assume Nero would detect that and use your hard-drive as temporary storage.
In Nero SmartStart, have you selected the CD or DVD tab to correspond to the project you're burning?
