I have a ryobi 2800r trimmer, my problem is when starting the pull cord will yank right out of your hand when trimmer makes a kick to start. Checked starting gear looks good, took fly wheel off thought key might be worn or half sheared to effect timing that looks ok. Is it some way timming can jump inside? Just wanted to ask before i go further. Thanks for any help. regards barry

Most likely it does not have a clutch which is common on cheap curved shaft trommers. The only cause for smoke in a 2 cycle engine is the oil you put in the gas.

There are two major differences in 2-cycle engines. There are water cooled and there
are air cooled engines and the oils are entirely different. Water cooled (outboard) engines run at much lower temperatures and at much lower RPM's. It is necessary for outboard oils to burn during the combustion cycle. In this situation the oil turns to smoke so that the oil is not deposited in or on the water. Air cooled engines run at a much higher temperature and must not be used with outboard oils. In an air cooled engine the oil should leave the muffler in liquid form. If the oil turns to smoke it is not able to lubricate the engine and a very undesirable carbon deposit is left behind leading to engine failure or stuck piston rings.

Since a top quality mixing oil will cost $12 or more for a six pack (that comes out to well over $100 a gallon of oil) there is little wonder that so many companies want a piece of that pie. Cheap oils no bargain even if it is free. If the oil says it is for outboards, lawn mowers, string trimmers, and chain saws, they are telling you that they know nothing about 2 cycle engines and only want to take your money. You should choose an oil whose brand is that of an engine manufacturer. Obviously these companies are not in the oil business but they want to make sure that they do not cause warranty claims from an inferior oil. The life of you engine is dependent on choosing a good grade of oil. You should pick an oil that you trust and that you can purchase on a consistent basis. Unlike gasoline, oil does not deteriorate with age. It is better to buy enough to last you a year or two than it is to change brands every time you run out.

The l0ud muffler probably can not be helped unless the muffler is rotted and needs replacing.

SOURCE: ryobi 2800r gas trimmer how to adjust carb mixture?

The are limiter caps and can be removed. Just pop them off and you'll see screws under them (put a small screwdriver around the bottom of cap and push upward and they'll come off).

SOURCE: Ryobi trimmer not spinning

Either the cintrifugal clutch is not engaging(if that model has one). Or the drive cable is snaped, or the rotary head drive lug is stripped. Pull off the drive head(where the nylon cord goes) & behind it is a flexable cable that transmits drive from the motor to the drive head(bobbin).pull it out and see if its broken.Check The rotary drive head lug,its on the top of the drive head (bobbin) you removed.
hope this helps

Starting up Ryobi Petrol Strimmer

full choke on , push petrol bubble 5 times then pull starter cord., with luck it will kick in to life after a 20/30 secs put on half choke , run again for 30 secs the no ckoke.

The main problem with Ryobi products is that they flood very very easly. So the more time you try and pump petrol into the carb the more it will flood . If that happenes then choke off and switch off and then just pull starter cord for about 30 secs then switch on and it could start if not prime it again as above good luck

It wont start

First, make sure that the gas mixture is correct (gas and oil mixed in the right proportion). Next, press the primer bulb 3-4 times, turn the choke lever on to Full Choke, and pull the starter cord until the engine seems like to wants to start, but dies. Next, switch the choke lever to Half Choke and start the gas trimmer, giving it gas by pulling on the trigger. Once it has warmed up fully, you may be able to reduce the Half Choke to No Choke, although my 20+ years of experience with dozens and dozens of models tells me that many trimmers run better, although smoking slightly, when you keep them at Half Choke. One last tip, when pulling the cord, try pushing the trimmer away from you with the opposite hand at the exact same time that you are pulling the starter cord--the equal and opposite push-pull technique may sound like something from karate (and it is, in a way), but it is really helpful when trying to start trimmers. Best of luck, Bill

PS: Check you owner's manual (at home or online) for the proper gas/oil mixture. Empty any old gas out and replace the spark plug, if required.

Please help me to stat this thing I have no manuel

When I first got my brand new RYOBI LIne Trimmer the *** thing just would not start. I was following the exact guidelines in the maual. First thing is, ensure you get right is fresh fuel correctly mixed accurately with 2-stroke oil. Some machines are more temperamental about the mix. 2. Set choke to COLD, press bulb 8 times (once you see fuel enteing the clear bubble reservoir) 3. Switch on power. It's amazing how often I've pulled the cord with that red button off. Dont think you cant do it to. 4. Pull the cord gently until you feel resistance. Let it gently recoil, then in one non-aggressive move, holding down the unit with your other hand, pull it out at constant speed. Do not yank! If (or rather when) it doesnt start, pull the accelerator trigger a couple of times only, and repeat procedure "4". Don't press bulb again too often or use the trigger too early or you will flood the engine. When I couldnt get my strimmer to start at all, I got this advice from an online engineer, it fired up *first pull*.

If it's not starting after a winter rest, did you store it empty of fuel because that is always wise. Discard old petrol mix and start with new. Hope that has helped.
