My USB can't recognized. The recommendation is this: "Try reconnecting the device. If Windows still does not recognize it, replace the device." The device works on other computers or laptops, but not on our laptop. Is this a wrong recommendation? If it's wrong, are there other recommendation/s?

Hi,

Here are some steps which you can try. It is not always that the device is defective. Maybe the generic USB controller/driver needs to be uninstalled then reinstalled or the USB port itself is broken.

- Go to Device Manager -> Right click USB Controller -> select Scan for Hardware Changes.
To go to the Device Manager in xp (Start -> Run -> type devmgmt.msc -> press Enter or OK), in Vista and Windows 7 ( Start -> type devmgmt.msc on the start search box -> press Enter)

- Access BIOS setup (either Del, F2, F10...depending on the laptop brand) then look for the option to restore default BIOS settings.

- Go to the Device Manager and unistall everything under the USB Controller then restart the unit. It should automatically reinstall the driver. Try to use multiple USB devices if possible.

- If the above steps will not work, you're USB port may be defective already.

I hope this helps. Please reply if one or any of these steps resolved your issue for the benefit of other users having the same problem as yours.

Regards.

When I connect my Canon PowerShot A3100 IS camera to either of two laptops via USB cable, I get an error message stating "USB Device Not Recognized - One of the USB devices attached to this computer...

I had this problem today and you might want to check this
from PC's menu = go to my computer right click and select properties
select device manager,
locate "canon camera" which may be under portable devices as mine was
There is either a plus or minus sign next to it. If it is negative as mine, delete this driver. Make sure your camera is off and unplugged before you delete it.
Plug camera in, turn on and the camera should download the driver again.
It worked for me - I'm not technically brilliant but basically, the driver wasn't working correctly.
If you can't find the same settings, call customer service - they were great.

Cannot get my Lexmark Z2420 printer working--it has the wi-fi capability, but trying to connect it via USB. Should be plug-and-play but windows makes a sound like it recognizes it, but nothing comes up as...

A quick fix for most communication errors can be achieved by resetting the printer and/or rebooting the PC. Simply disconnect the printer from your computer. Reboot your pc. Unplug and re-plug the printer into the power source to reset it. When the printer turns on, reconnect it to your computer. Then try to print again once the computer fully recognizes the USB connection.

If that doesn't help, try the steps below:

1. Disconnect the printer from your computer.

2. Rebrick (pull out power supply, black box where the power cord is plugged in at the back of the printer, and put it back after 30 seconds).

2. On your computer, go to Control Panel > Printers and Faxes.

3. Delete the Lexmark print object.

4. Reboot your pc.

5. When your pc turns on, reconnect the printer.

6. Wait until your pc fully recognizes the USB connection. To check, go to Control Panel > Printers and Faxes. If you see a new Lexmark print object in the list, then try to print again.

You may also try to update your printer driver by visiting the Lexmark website at http://bit.ly/9xPHL4. Select your operating system, download and execute the file.

If the problem continues, please contact Lexmark Technical Support Center for additional assistance.

Windows 7 NexStar CX USB 2.0 3.5 inch SATA drive when connecting, windows 7 can't recognize the USB drive and shows a message "unknown device". The blue light of the the hard drive...

This is the usual reason:
USB port has 4 pins (connectors). The two at the ends supply 5 Volts to the hard drive (or any other appliance you connect. I don't think there's a problem with those two because you can see the power light on the hard drive.
The middle is for data transfer. If one gets damaged, although the device gets power, the OS cannot recognize the device.
Try changing the USB cable you are using. Connectors in the wire are damaged more easily than those in the device.

I have Windows XP. I connected the hard drive according to the directions and the first message read USB device not recognized. The second message read Try reconnecting. If windows does not recognize it...

If it is a desktop computer, try connecting to one of the rear USB ports. sometimes drives won't be recognized properly from a secondary USB or HUB. If it's a notebook go into control panel and see if you can find and delete unknown devices in hardware then attach and see if it connects. XP should not need a driver install.

Tried the solution you offered for c240....

Go to Start --> Control Panel --> Printers and Other Hardware --> System --> hardware --> device manager --> right click on the usb port that is malfunctioning (should have a red or yellow exclamation by it), right-click it and click on Update Driver

If that fails, try another USB port on the computer to see if you have more success
