Question about Dell Dimension 3000 PC Desktop

1 Answer

Front panel USB connector

I plug in usb to front panel & it does (eventually) show up in "my computer" as removable disk "f" & sometimes it does not "kick in" but a few times it does take & i try to download music and it starts to download but then stop & says cannot download as it cannot find/ identify path. crazy part is i will plug in again (i have no idea what reboot is) & if it takes i will see music folder listed when i open "f" disk up but it will not play & then locks up & then no trace of usb flash stick can be found. am i missing some sort of software setup? thank you

First try plugging it into the motherboard USB on the back of the computer. Sometimes the front panel ones act up a bit. Then make sure the drive letter (f) is not in conflict with another device. You can actually change the drive letter in computer administrator.

Fix hard disk

with the device plugged in, open your device manager. The device should show a yellow exclamation mark next to it. Select it and delete it.
Unplug the device.
Power the computer completely off.
Plug the device into a different USB port (one you know works)
Boot it back up
If this doesn't fix it, repeat the process a few times with different ports and also using a different USB cable, if you have one.

If this still doesn't work, the troubleshooting gets significantly more complex.

Rocstor external harddrive disappears from desktop. Why?

click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x
right click to reinstall drivers or

if you can see your usb but its not working
ports(com&lpt)right click update driver

sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable

just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems

if this fails to fix the problem
you might have to install a usb 2 or 3 card they are cheap and easy to install you can buy these on Ebay very cheap
hope this helps

How do I view the files in my LaCie backup folder? The show hidden files/folders option is checked and I still can't see anything.

It appears you have an external hard drive. It should connect to your computer with a USB cable. Make sure the external hard drive is turned on and running before you connect the usb cable to the computer. Some external hard drives have an on/off switch and some do not. you can hear it running if you put your ear close to the case.

When you plug it in, wait a few minutes and the computer should indicate that it has recognized it. (sometimes this does not happen) In any case, after a few minutes, open My Computer (Computer, in Windows 7) (sometimes referred to as Explorer- NOT to be confused with Windows Explorer which is an internet browser). You should see a list of recognized drives including your external hard drive. Doubler click on it and you should be able to see your files.

If it doesn't show in Explorer, the computer might be trying to assign a drive letter to it that is already taken. To fix that, go to Control panel, Administrator Tools, Computer management, Disk Management. You should see your external drive listed and you can assign an unused drive designation to it there. You should then be able to go back to Explorer and see it. You might have to refresh the Explorer screen.

San disk not showing up on the computers

Do you have a drive letter F already on your computer? If so, many USB flash drives try to use that drive letter and do not show up in your "My Computer".

You can go to your disk manager and see if the disk is actually present:
right click on your My Computer icon -> manage
choose Disk management

See if the flash drive is listed. If not, try another USB port - still not? Drive may be bad :-(

If the drive is listed, right click on the square to the left side and choose "change drive letter" Change it to an unused letter, such as "U". Check your My Computer, it will be there

Hope this helps
