You need to download the printer drivers from the Compaq/HP WEB support/download page. Make sure you select your model printer and the XP or Vista Windows version of the drivers you require and install them. Click on this link to download the drivers: - www.hp.com/#Support
Go to www.lexmark.com. Click on the support link. Lookup your specific printer model #. Download & install the software/drivers for the operating system you are running. You should now be all set. Hope this helps & please take a moment to rate this solution. Thanks.
Do you have the CD that came with the printer. I think you are supposed to cancel out of the setup wizard that windows pops up and run the Lexmark CD instead.
If you don't have the CD you can download driver from Lexmark website.

From what you describe the printer is not installed correctly.
I would try uninstalling everything associated with this device, unplugging it and then retry the installation process again. I don't know if the instructions are clear but you should not connect the USB cable to the printer until after the software is installed or when prompted by the software wizard.
