No, the agitator should have a rigid, fixed position. It is only supposed to rotate "back and forth".

Hello & Welcome to FixYa

The problem seems to be with the agitator kit located inside or the bolt itself is loose, please view this video for step by step instructions to solve the problem:

Tub fills, agitator does not start, buzzing sound only - which may last for several minutes before starting to operate. Clothes may wash but machine stops before cycle finishes. Last time machine was used...

The motor for the machine is probably burned out with the power off you can check the motor winding with a meter ohm the wire out to the motor if no resistance bad motor.

Our kenmore elite washer makes a loud loud noise when spinning and the tub has alot of play from side to side when not running. Does this maching have a nut on the bottom holding the tub in place?

You can remove the agitator to see if it has a nut holding the tub on, but from what you are saying the transmission bearings are worn out. Loud noise and side to side play would indicate this. If the agitator does come off you can see if it has a nut that will tighten the tub down. I have never seen one as most are all one section tub to transmission. Keep me posted on what you find.

I have a Kenmore 80 series and it recently started to sound like it always had an unbalanced load. The top part of the tub is loose and the bottom part seems ok. I was told that it may need the agitator...

you have to remove the screws 1 on each side of the control panel ,then flip the panel up and remove the clips should be 1 on each side, then you can lift off the whole cabinet at 1 time leaving just the tub and backing,

Washer agitator won't agitate

Look at the center. can you pull the agitator up and out of the tub? You can try it with the motor running but don't grab it too snugly. Try and push it up and down while running. If it seems to try and move there used to be a rubber spindle on the trans shaft under the agitator that would become separated. I don't know if yours has one or not but the agitators were a bugger to remove usually because of the corrosion that happens. A special tool that was an air bladder used to fit under the agitator and you'd blow it up like and inner tube and pop it off. If you get the agitator off you try to get it to agitate and if you cant stop it by hand your at the problem either you'll see it obviously or it will come apart inside the agitator.

Maytag won't spin or agitate

I have had the same problem and found that the teeth on the under side of the agitator had been worn down to nothing... I assume this is from years of over loading (not from me) and so the agitator could not spin any more... i would tighten the bolt that holds th agitator on and it would come loose after a few loads. So my solution was to get a little bit longer bolt and newer plastic washer and tighten it as tight as i could and it seemed to work. Versus buying a new agitator base that would cost about $20-$30 and would have to wait for the part to be ordered. hope this helps
