I assume this happens mostly with recordable DVDs that you recorded / burned yourself, and less often with store bought DVD movies.
This brand is infamous for its unreliability. They are known to have trouble playing certain types or brands of recordable DVDs and will very likely quit working altogether within a year.

Some people have suggested disassembling the unit and replacing some of the components on the power supply circuit board to increase its functionality, but unless you are an electronics technician, I would recommend you save yourself the money and hassle and just go out and get yourself a better quality unit instead.
The really good brand names like Sony will certainly be a little more expensive initially, but you will not regret the purchase later given the normally excellent build quality and dependable customer service and support you get from them.
I'm afraid this is not just a button or setting issue and there is not much you can do to fix that machine yourself. You will simply have to live with its limited functionality until you get a new one.
