My Toshiba L645D-S4030 is running fine, but the display is extremely dimly lit. I can faintly see the wallpaper on the screen and can faintly see icons/menus when I roll mouse over them, but its too dark to see the actual mouse. I can hardly see anything. I was watching a DVD 2 days ago and closed the it up, but didn't stop the DVD. When I returned, the display was as it is now. Suggestions?

Most likely the LCD inverter has gone bad. This is the part that provides power to the back-light of the display. In order to replace it, you'll have to get the part number of the LCD. Be aware, they used different LCD in the same size display. It will require removing the bezel and removing the screws that hold the LCD in place so you can get to the back to read the part number of the LCD. The inverter shouldn't cost that much, but if you have a shop do the repair, you're looking at $125-$175. good luck.

Laptop screen is very dim. There is a very faint image. The LCD screen is brand new so that's not the problem

Hello,

As per your description, it is probably your inverter which is faulty.

The inverter is an electrical device which 'lits' the LCD. Without the inverter and the bulbs it powers, the screen would be too faint to be seen correctly.

To test if the inverter is defective, just turn on your laptop in a dark space, then put a flashlight on the screen to see if you have a fainted display. If you can see something, it is the inverter which is defective and should be replaced.

If you are handy, you can also remove the screen cover to see if there is a neon like light which lits up behind the LCD. If you can see the light, it means that the inverter is just working fine and that the is with the LCD itself, but if there is no light coming from behind the LCD, then you need to replace the inverter.

1. After removing the screen 'cover', locate a small circuit board (usually below the LCD). Unplug the electrical cables and replace.
