Microsoft Security Essentials is a fairly good free antivirus, or so I hear. I use it on my computers, but I've never had a virus so far so I can't tell you personally how good it is.

Is the thing telling him he has 68 viruses McAfee? There are a lot of malware and viruses out there that tell you either your system is infected or some pretend you have hardware issues. They generally have a "Fix" button that tells that your subscription expired and try to harvest your person information and credit card. Don't give them any information, and contact your credit cards immediately if you "purchased" a new licence. They're pretty good about refunding your money about stuff like that.
If he doesn't have anything important on it yet and it has a recovery partition or restore discs, he can try using them. That would wipe the drive including any viruses / trojans / malware.
I probably wouldn't get Mcafee, Trend Micro, or Norton, they're all pretty terrible. Try getting Webroot, Kaspersky, or one of the free online ones (Avast!, Immunet Protect Antivirus, Spyware doctor with antivirus). Just make sure you only have one on at a time.

For PC's, I have had very good luck with Avast free edition. There are pay versions available, but I install avast on any PC i work on that is without antivirus software. It can be downloaded from www.avast.com. Hope this helps you out!
First uninstall avast and go to avg and download there home free version, i have a computer repair shop and i dont let a computer leave without putting it on the unit. avg also offers a bootable cd download that can remove the virus. if you can get access to another computer down load it and burn to cd. http://majorgeeks.com/AVG_Rescue_CD_d6434.html you will need to change the boot order to boot to cd first. i think it is esc or f12 and the follow the instructions.
It seems to me that you do not need them. If you have no Internet connection by YOUR choice, how are you going to get viruses on a PC isolated from Internet. Oh yes, your colleagues. Lock you computer with a password and disable the AUTORUN feature of the CD-ROM. Don't let anyone touch it without you being present.
