Brother 8460n - toner error

After replacing an empty toner with a brand new brother replacement, the status light turned red and a "toner error" appeared that states "reinstall drum unit". It does not say replace drum, however, I have reset the drum counter to 00 and it was "accepted". Still won't work. Any suggestions? Thanks, Laura

Hi, This worked for us:

The message "Toner Error" is usually caused by the drum and/or toner
cartridge not being installed properly or if the machine does not
recognize the toner. To clear this message, follow the steps listed
below:

1. Verify you are using Genuine Brother Cartridges. Brother strongly
recommends that you do not refill the toner cartridges provided with
your machine. We also strongly recommend that you continue to use only
Genuine Brother Brand replacement toner cartridges. Use or attempted use
of potentially incompatible tone cartridges in the Brother machine may cause damage to the machine and/or may result in
unsatisfactory print quality. Our warranty coverage does not apply to
any problem that is caused by the use of unauthorized third party toner
and/or cartridges. To protect your investment and obtain premium
performance from the Brother machine, we strongly recommend the use of
Genuine Brother Supplies.

2. Make sure that you are using the correct drum and toner cartridge(s)
for your machine. The part numbers for your model are as follows:
NOTE: Some cartridges can look EXACTLY the same among different models
and will fit the machine even if they are not designed for use in that
model. Verify the part number before using the cartridge(s).

TN550: Toner cartridge (standard)
TN580: Toner cartridge (high yield)
DR520 = Drum unitt.

3. Make sure that the cartridge is not damaged. Remove the toner
cartridge by following the steps listed below:

a. Press the cover release button and then open the front cover.

b. Remove the old drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. Place it on a
drop cloth or disposable paper to avoid scattering toner.
NOTE: Be careful not to spill the toner. If toner gets on your
clothes or hands, wipe or wash it off immediately with cold water.

c. Hold down the blue lock lever on the right and pull the toner
cartridge out of the drum unit.

d. Look at the toner cartridge and see if any parts or pieces appear to
be broken or missing, if so, the cartridge may be defective and should
be replaced.

4. If the toner cartridge is not damaged, reinstall it into the drum
unit. If it was damaged, use a new toner cartridge and reinstall it into
the drum unit.

5. Reset the drum/toner unit into the machine.

6. Close the front cover.

7. If the message "Toner Error' continues to appear on the display
unplug the machine from the wall outlet.

8. Open the front cover and remove the drum and toner assembly.

9. Look inside where the drum was. On the left side wall, look for a
small, black plastic lever/actuator. A flashlight may help see it.

10. Using the palm of your hand, slide it along the left wall in and
out a few times as this may free up the actuator/lever in case it is
stuck. The actuator/lever is spring loaded and needs to move back and
spring forward to operate correctly.

If the lever does not move, spring back or is missing and your machine
is within warranty, you can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center
(ASC) in your area or contact Brother Customer Service by calling
1-877-Brother (1-877-276-8437) Monday through Friday, excluding
holidays. If the machine is out of warranty, you can locate a Brother
Authorized Service Center using the information listed above.

If the lever moves freely and springs back to its original position
continue to Step 11.

11. Reinstall the drum and toner assembly, close the front cover and
plug the machine in.

Brother HL3170CDW printer. Waste Toner Box clearing error message.

There is a section at the end of this post

  1. If error message still says replace waste toner box, then you need to check the sight glass again. The flag must be horizontal at the bottom of the glass or it is not completely empty.

I keep getting the message, "Toner error, replace drum unit". I have a MFC Brother 8460N. Jane

Have you replaced the Drum unit? Drum unit on Brothers can be reset if copy is good and you do not want to replace. If copy bad replace Drum. Rebuilt drums work as good as original at half price.

After printing several hundred sheets, status light went red. There was no paper jam. Let printer "cool down" overnight. Status light still red. Drum has never been replaced. Toner light is on. However, in...

Well, if the toner light is on, you're probably out of toner and the only reason it ran, was because it was low but not completely depleted.

Try new toner drum off of Ebay or Amazon for the best prices for your brother printer.

My Brother HL5250DN shows toner light on (yellow) and status light on (red) even after toner cartridge replaced with new one. Already tried reset by holding down go button. Is the printer dead?

Try this..
1: Turn off power and remove toner/drum
2: Tape the little spring loaded lever just inside the printer on the upper left hand side in the *DOWN* position! Do not replace drum yet and...
3: Turn power on to printer and let it cycle. Status/Toner lights will come on as usual.
4: Turn off printer, remove tape from lever, replace drum and turn back on.

Brother Printer HL 5250DN

A solid red STATUS light with a solid yellow TONER light indicates toner out...replace according to pg. 63 in the manual.
It can also indicate a cartridge position error. Take the DRUM UNIT out of the machine and re-install.

A solid red STATUS light only means:

Front cover open
Fuser cover open
Dust on drum
Too many trays
Buffer error
Print overrun
Memory full
Download full
Font full

See pg.48 ofthe manual.

After replacing the toner, an abnormal sound of wheels coming

I just had the same problem.....I changed drum and toner at the same time.....bad sounds....tried old toner with new drum and "new" toner with old drum.....seems that the gears that move the toner and the drum were not meshing correctly. I determined that it was the "new" toner. I discarded new toner and used a different one....that fixed it

Status red and amber Toner light

This problem you are getting is to replace the toner cartridge. Have you recently changed the drum unit as well. If so exchange it back to the other one.

After installing new toner or full toner cartridge and removing the yellow plastic cover press the go button this should start the printer on a cycle and add the toner. If this doesn't work then the toner sensor has malfunctioned and will need replacing. This will in turn out way the cost of a new machine.

Hope this helps and not too late for you.

Thanks Jason

Brother 5240 laser printer changed toner still wont work.

This works on several different Brother Printers to get rid of toner/drum empty errors:

1. Open the front cover and leave open while completing the following steps.
2. Turn the printer off.
3. Hold the 'go' button while turning the printer on. All panel lights should be on.
4. Release the 'go' button.
5. Press the 'go' button 2 times.
6. Pause.
7. Press the 'go' button 5 times.
8. The toner light should be off.
9. The paper light should be on or flashing [doesn't happen on all].
10. Close cover. The ready light should be the only light on.
