Most probably your Audio drivers are not properly installed or not installed or the "audio device might be faulty" for your system. (Do you see any sound icon at the taskbar?)

Go to link.Select your OS, download & install the XP audio drivers (uninstall any audio drivers, previously install before reinstalling the downloaded drivers from the site) @ http://support.acer.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=112

If you need further help, read the "Support Document" tab at the drivers link page. Read the FAQ "Resolving Sound Issues"

Hope it helps.

I no longer see a sound icon in the toolbar just a sound management icon which allows me to do nothing at all. Used to see the volume icon. Almost as though hardware has dissappeared...

On XP OS, go to Control Panel -> Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices(Category View) ->
Sound and Audio Devices -> Check, Volume Tab "Place volume icon in taskbar" box -> Click, Apply & OK. and the volume icon should appear on the taskbar ie if your Audio Drivers are properly installed. ( If the "Volume Tab" grey out, it means that no device drivers are installed or the Audio Devices are disabled or faulty Audio Devices. Check your CMOS settings to verify if the Audio device is disabled. Hope it will helps. Regards

Why doesn't my internal "realtek" sound system have any sound?

Check that the speaker cable is plugged into the GREEN ringed "Speaker" jack (for a normal stereo sound set up). Check that the speaker isn't muted in system tray. Right click the speaker in the system tray. Click Volume Control Options and make sure you have the analog Realtek Audio selected - not any HDMI or Digital output. Open "Control Panel" in Windows. Open "Device Manager" found in the "Hardware and Sound" heading. Locate "Sound, Video.." Make sure there is no small icon over it to indicate that there is a problem. If there is, click the triangle to the left and open "Realtek.." Right click it and select properties. Click the Driver tab and then "Uninstall" If an option to remove files is presented - select it, too. Click OK to uninstall. Reboot if prompted. Allow Windows to find the "new" Realtek hardware and download drivers from Live Update. Sound should be restored. Make sure that you have selected Analog

Acer laptops run on the Windows operating system.
They also have built-in speakers that have a menu to change the settings.
All laptop speakers have a driver that tells the speaker how to function.
If the driver gets damaged or deleted, the speakers are rendered unusable.
Acer speaker problems usually have a driver issue that can be solved by the user.

Go to "Start," "Control Panel," "System and Security (or System and Maintenance)," "System," then "Device Manager."
Type in the Administrator password, if you are prompted to do so.
Click on "Sound, Video and Game Controllers."
Right-click the name of your Acer speakers and select "Update Driver Software."
Click on "Search Automatically for Updated Driver Software" and allow the computer to download any updates.
Reboot your Acer laptop.
Raise Speaker Sound Levels
Click on the "speaker" icon located in the lower right corner of your desktop.
Raise the volume bar all the way up to increase the sound.
Select "Mixer" to raise the other volume bars all the way up.
Windows 7 right click on the speaker icon in the taskbar select either playback or recording devices you should see your microphone listed under the recording tab right click on it select
properties at the bottom select use this device enable
