My clarion car stereo in my peugeot 206 cc is displaying the message 'ext mute'. I cannot listen to the radio and can no longer play CD's. I've tried turning the system off and on, switching from radio to CD, ejecting and inserting CD but the message re-appears after a few seconds. Can you shed any light on this problem please?

You need to reset the system, disconnect the car battery for 10minutes....... reconnect, enter radio code and should be back to normal.

try different KnownGood cd and if still an issue your head unit needs repair internally .(not worth it)

I cut the orange wire which went into the black connecter block
and WOW I had sound...

Yes it will, there is a short wiring loom between the headunit and the cars loom. they are universal and just plug in and away you go.

When you disconnect your battery and then reconnect it again, it disables the radio. This is an anti-theft protection for your car radio.
The enable your radio the activation code is in your vehicle owner's manual. If you do not have this code you need to go to your Peugeot service centre and get them to enter this code for you.

Your radio is made by CLARION and the only CLARION code available for free (using a serial number ) from anywhere on the Internet is if your radio also has a BARCODE SERIAL NUMBER beginning with C 7000000 + + + + on a separate label somewhere on the metal casing. (Note ...not beginning with CL.)
If not then it will only be available from your Main Dealer or a Decoding Service or your local Car Radio / Audio Store who will connect a laptop to read/recode the memory chip (EEPROM) inside your radio
