as far as i can tell all of the ide cables are set to auto detect and all of the SATA ports are also on auto detect.  I have windows XP running from an ide master and i also am trying to install a SATA 500 GB Western Digital HDD and i was wondering if this was even possible with a Biostar P4m800-M7?

Is your bios set for sata or ide
also is it set for auto detection of all drives and is the jumper on hard drive set for master.

ASUS K8V-MX mother board can support seagate 500gb

Yes, it has Serial ATA support (as well as Parallel ATA) so go ahead and use it.
Whether you will need a Molex 4-pin power cable or a converter (to SATA power specification) is dependent on the age of the drive (whether it has a molex connector or a sata clip) and what you have available at your power supply.

REPLACE HARD DISK

Just check with the manufacturer's manual for motherboard. If it is a new BIOS then it will support this.

Hard disk not detecting

It is very likely that your motherboard is not capable of handling large HDDs. Too bad, friend. Use a smaller one, or may be two of them.

Installing a IDE to SATA converter adapter

I have successfully connected a older. 20 GB drive to a computer with a 2. sata connection on the mother board.

Buy trial and error I found that connecting a power cable to the converter and the hard drive was the only way to get the Bios To recognize the drive.
Done sucessfuly with a 40GB drive as well, Set drive to master.

I had the similar problem with the K8MM-V Motherboard. I has been using a PATA HDD. I need to intall a 250Gig Seagate SATA HDD. Despit all the Bios Configs the PC Could not detec the HDD. Untill i Put a Jumper on the HDD  limiting the SATA HDD to 1.5gig of OS instead of 3gig. Look at the Label of your HDD
